UPDATE – 3.09 pm IST (9.39 am GMT) – There is a large cheer from the crowd and it looks like the rain has stopped for now, which is great news. However, given the forecast, there’s plenty more to come and just a minute later, it has started raining again. Can’t catch a proper break this rain. A couple of minutes later, the Mexican Wave is going around the crowd, not quite sure whether that’s because the rain has stopped again or just to keep themselves entertained. Either way, the crowd does seem optimistic.
UPDATE – 2.50 pm IST (9.20 am GMT) – The rain has been steady for 15-20 minutes now and seems to have picked up in intensity as well. Hopefully, it is a heavy shower that flies away soon and the skies clear out a bit so that we can have some hope about any sort of resumption in play. Meanwhile, on-air, Matthew Hayden is discussing the prowess of Gabba’s drainage system and mentions that since the surface was relayed, the water just slides off the covers the moment rain stops and it all gets cleared out pretty soon. This is the reason just the pitch is under covers and nothing else.
Game stopped due to : Rain Stoppage
UPDATE – 2.30 pm IST (9 am GMT) – The visuals from The Gabba now indicate that it has started raining as well. It doesn’t seem heavy for now but it does seem persistent. The wait goes on and in all likelihood, it will go on for a fair while more. Fingers crossed, folks, fingers crossed.
UPDATE – 2.20 pm IST (8.50 am GMT) – Wow, things are starting to look pretty gloomy as there is a warning on the big screen at the ground. The message warns that the weather conditions are severe and asks everyone to take shelter and not stay in open areas for now. Even the players are asked to go indoors and a few of the stands are emptying up as people move further inside. Hopefully, the clouds along with the lightning move quickly and pass soon, because if things stay like this, we might be in for a long delay. Stick around as we bring you the latest news from the ground.
Game stopped due to : Bad Weather Condition
UPDATE – 2.10 pm IST (8.40 am GMT) – A halt in play and that’s due to lightning, which is dangerous enough for the umpires to stop the game. Also, there is a large and angry bank of clouds coming in towards The Gabba, which means we might see rain pretty soon, and according to the radar, it could be heavy showers. The umpires take the players off the field and the ground staff make their way onto the field of play, gearing up to cover things up in case it does rain. Let’s hope that it does not rain and conditions are soon fit for play again. Stay tuned for further updates.
