Granville, Ohio- Carrying a win streak of four, the Big Red hosted the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace University for the final regular-season match of the year. In a battle of two evenly matched teams, the Yellow Jackets were able to halt the Big Red momentum as Denison fell in straight sets. Denison enters the postseason with a 13-15 overall record following the loss.
Up Next: After a 4-3 conference record, the Big Red secured the 4th seed in the NCAC tournament. The Big Red will host No. 5 DePauw on Tuesday, November 11 in the quarter finals.
Match 1 (Denison 0, Baldwin Wallace 3) (21-25, 15-25, 14-25)
In the final regular season match of the season, the Big Red hosted the Yellow Jackets from Baldwin Wallace University. Baldwin Wallace, reigning from the OAC, marks the final of the NCAC-OAC crossover matches that riddled this season’s schedule.
In the first set, both teams found themselves in a back-and-forth battle. As the Big Red brought it within one point, the visitors responded with a five-point swing to claim the momentum. Emily Monachino and Ayla Dunbar were able to record late kills, but the effort was too little as Baldwin Wallace claimed the first set in a 25-21 decision.
In the second set, Denison kept the match knotted at three all. However, the Yellow Jackets would go on to score 19 of the next 25 points to silence the Big Red crowd. The duo of Monachino and Dunbar were able to create a five-point run in the closing moments but it was Baldwin Wallace who was able to seal the second set.
The Yellow Jackets were unwavering in their attack, jumping out to an 11-2 lead and leading by as much as 11 points. The trio of Dunbar, Alice Kempf, and Carolina Parkhurst were able to string together back-to-back-to-back points late. Ultimately, Baldwin Wallace claimed the deciding set in a 25-14 decision.
In the match, the Big Red were led by Monachino with eight kills. Amelia Kurtz and Alice Kempf led the way with 14 and 12 assists, respectively. Kurtz shared the dig lead with Ryan Kotalik as the pair recorded nine apiece.
