And the teenager needs to be assessed by the medical staff after seemingly picking up a leg injury.
City will hope that the issue, which looks to be a calf strain, is one he can run off.
18’ Manchester City 0-0 Liverpool
Since the start of 2023-24, no goalkeeper has saved more penalties in Europe's big-five leagues than Giorgi Mamardashvili (6).
Thanks to our friends at Opta for that stat.
17’ Manchester City 0-0 Liverpool
Doku is causing all sorts of problems down the left.
He finds Cherki in the middle and his shot from the edge of the box is deflected over for a corner.
City have settled much faster of the two sides.
15’ Manchester City 0-0 Liverpool
What a save that is from Mamardashvili. Read Haaland's penalty perfectly.
The big Georgian keeper atones for his error but it's Konate who should be the most relieved person inside the Etihad.
Dreadful mistake in the build up to giving the penalty away. Now Liverpool need to make the most of that let-off.
14’ Manchester City 0-0 Liverpool
That sequence of play summed up the mercurial Jeremy Doku.
Superb dribbling, acceleration and persistence, but not the awareness to lift his head up and slide in Erling Haaland before he was caught by the goalkeeper.
Look how open he is!
12’ Manchester City 0-0 Liverpool
Erling Haaland steps up after plenty of pushing and shoving and goes low to the right of goal — but Mamardashvili makes a huge save!
VAR takes a quick look to make sure he did not come off his line early and it is all clear.
What drama already!
10’ Manchester City 0-0 Liverpool
A nightmare start for Liverpool!
That starts with Konate causing a mix-up to allow Doku in but Mamardashvili is judged to have fouled the Belgian with a trailing leg after that.
Haaland will take the kick…
9’ Manchester City 0-0 Liverpool
The referee has gone over to the monitor to assess Giorgi Mamardashvili's tackle on Jeremy Doku to determine if it was a penalty.
Arne Slot looks worried…
9’ Manchester City 0-0 Liverpool
Well, how have City not scored?!
Doku steals in and is through on goal after Konate clears it against Bradley but then goes down under a challenge from Mamardashvili — and City want a penalty.
Cherki has a couple of shots, blocked by Szoboszlai, in the aftermath.
6’ Manchester City 0-0 Liverpool
Some lovely moments of quality from Jeremy Doku in the early part of this half.
He shows good awareness and footwork to pinch the ball off Gravenberch and beat two men on a run into the box, then moments later unleashes a lovely pass for Phil Foden.
It escapes the England man but that was a nice move.
3’ Manchester City 0-0 Liverpool
The home side have seen the bulk of the ball in these opening minutes as Liverpool apply pressure and try to force the issue.
O’Reilly wins an early free kick under a challenge from Gravenberch.
1’ Manchester City 0-0 Liverpool
And we’re off and running in this blockbuster match!
The two managers have entered the pitch with wreaths made up of poppies on behalf of their respective clubs on Remembrance Sunday.
The Etihad observes a period of silence during the Last Post.
And this is a big day of celebration for Pep Guardiola at the Etihad.
Both sets of players shake hands in front of huge banners dedicated to the Manchester City manager for the 1000th game of his managerial career.
Liverpool's Alexander Isak looks on thoughtfully from the bench.
Pep Guardiola's achievements being celebrated here on the day of his 1,000th game as a manager. Can Liverpool spoil the party? Slot's side have been a soft touch on their travels so far this season. Any such vulnerability will be exploited here.
“I am a genius. Tactics, my friend.”
Devoid of context, Pep Guardiola’s reply to a journalist's question after Manchester City’s 3-1 win against Bournemouth last Sunday seems arrogant.
Instead, it was a sarcastic comment about giving Jeremy Doku freedom to move around as the mood took him. Indeed, Guardiola constantly develops his players and offers them tactical solutions to win matches.
This season, City’s midfield passing combinations in midfield have cut through opponents’ defensive blocks, helped by Doku’s improved ability in narrow positions and Nico O’Reilly’s profile, allowing them to overload the central space.
Another crucial aspect of City’s passing combinations: the speed at which they are performed.
His comments after the Bournemouth game emphasised the importance of execution, but the development he gives his players and the tools he offers them can’t be separated from it.
Guardiola’s quip about him being a genius was tongue-in-cheek. That doesn’t mean it’s not true.
Mentality and late goals defined Liverpool's seven-game winning run to start the campaign but there were flaws in those performances and they were exposed further in defeats.
The strength of the past two games has been the midfield three looking as good as they did last season. Having Gravenberch, Mac Allister and Szoboszlai in form has helped extinguish a number of fires.
Just hearing ‘set piece’ sends a shiver down Liverpool supporters’ spines. They have been undone by them repeatedly domestically.
While those fans will be delighted to learn that City are the only side who have not scored from a set piece in the Premier League this season, it’s concerning that they may be due one.
If it’s not set pieces Slot is talking about, it’s been long balls and low blocks. He has admitted his side are yet to figure out how to be successful against such tactics.
City's greatest strength is their ability to maximise Erling Haaland’s strengths.
Last season, it was not uncommon to see him completely shut out of a game, but in this one City have an adaptability that makes them a threat against both low blocks and teams who try to press them.
Their weakness is an inability to maintain a consistent intensity throughout an entire game.
City have yet to fully dominate a match, which is admittedly becoming harder in the Premier League, but there are periods when they lose control and the fragility of last season starts to sneak in again.
Manchester City vs Liverpool will be Pep Guardiola’s 1000th match as a manager.
The Athletic went right back to the start, to tell the story of his first game in coaching.
It was with Barcelona B in Premia de Mar on the Catalan coast, a league match in Spain’s regionalised fourth division. And it finished 0-0.
In Guardiola’s eyes, the success he enjoyed over 2007-08 with Barcelona’s reserve team has been overlooked.
It is a tale of never-ending bus trips across his native Catalonia, of dirt pitches and old-school astroturf where the ball would bounce wildly. There was no time for tiki-taka.
And it all led to the “most important” title of his career. Dive deeper below.
