    Q2 8:22 – Steelers 3, Chargers 2
Justin Herbert is sacked on first down but immediately gets the yardage back on the ensuing play, connecting with Ladd McConkey for a gain of 16 yards into the red zone.
    Q2 9:50 – Steelers 3, Chargers 2
Vidal has provided a spark on this drive, rushing for 8 yards on third-and-2 as Los Angeles' drive continues, approaching the red zone.
Darius Slay left the game with an apparent injury. The Steelers are already playing versatile DB Jalen Ramsey at safety due to an injury to DeShon Elliott. Rather than move Ramsey, James Pierre is playing outside corner in Slay's absence.
    Q2 11:47 – Steelers 3, Chargers 2
Quality run there from Kimani Vidal, dancing for 11 yards into Steelers territory.
Darius Slay remained down after colliding with a pair of his teammates. It appeared he took a shot to the head there. The veteran defensive back was helped to the sideline after a few moments.
After a slow start, the Steelers' offense found a rhythm during their last drive, but self-inflicted wounds left them with nothing. A false start and a dropped pass set them back just outside the red zone. After a check down on third down, Chris Boswell uncharacteristically missed the FG attempt.
    Q2 13:10 – Steelers 3, Chargers 2
The ruling on the field of a completed pass has been reversed.
Pittsburgh then faces third-and-10 but cannot convert as a short pass to Kenneth Gainwell goes nowhere, gaining just 2 yards.
Chris Boswell trots on to attempt a 45-yard field goal but he pushes it wide right. He had previously made 16 field goals in a row.
    I didn't even know he could miss…
    Q2 13:51 – Steelers 3, Chargers 2
A screen to Pat Freiermuth gains 9 yards before Kaleb Johnson rushes for 7 yards on second-and-1, but the gain is negated by a holding penalty.
No worries for Pittsburgh though as Aaron Rodgers finds Jonnu Smith for a gain of 18 yards and a first down.
Los Angeles challenges the ruling of a completed pass. The ball certainly hit the ground but did Smith have control?
    End Q1 – Steelers 3, Chargers 2
Defenses have prevailed or maybe offenses have faltered. Regardless of how you frame it, the two teams combined for just 85 yards of offense in the first quarter.
That said, Pittsburgh is driving and will have a first-and-10 at Los Angeles' 29-yard line to start the second quarter.
I wonder how much of yesterday’s Oregon-Iowa game former Ducks quarterback Justin Herbert caught yesterday. That 18-16, old-school Big Ten rock fight, won by Oregon on a last-second field goal, would have given him a great preview of how tonight’s game is shaping up.
    Q1 1:58 – Steelers 3, Chargers 2
Quick start for Pittsburgh on this possession as Aaron Rodgers threads a pass to DK Metcalf for a gain of 19 yards.
Two plays later, Rodgers finds Darnell Washington for a gain of 15 yards into Los Angeles territory. That was a nice throw into a tight window.
The Chargers are averaging 1.9 yards per offensive play. The Steelers are averaging 1.1. yards per offensive play. The Chargers have scored two points on a safety. The Steelers have scored three points on a 59-yard field goal. This game is shaping up to be a defensive-focused slopfest.
    Q1 3:11 – Steelers 3, Chargers 2
Los Angeles' offense continues to sputter a bit after a false start makes it third-and-9.
Justin Herbert faces pressure, forcing him to fire a pass behind Quentin Johnston as the Chargers punt for a third time already.
After missing nearly his entire rookie year with a knee injury, Steelers second-year right tackle Troy Fautanu hadn't allowed a sack all season. However, the first one he's allowed in the NFL was costly. Khalil Mack beat Fautanu around the edge and sacked quarterback Aaron Rodgers for a safety.
As just noted on the NBC broadcast, this is not the first Los Angeles-Pittsburgh game with a 3-2 score today — in the NHL, the Kings beat the Penguins in Pittsburgh earlier by that score.
The score is 3-2. Feels like it's gonna be one of those nights.

Two wily veterans trying to outsmart each other — and Khalil Mack wins the battle, refusing to fall for Aaron Rodgers’ misdirection. Huge swing in favor of the Chargers.
    Q1 5:09 – Steelers 3, Chargers 2
Rookie Kaleb Johnson gets an opportunity early in this game, rushing twice to set up third-and-7.
    Disaster for Pittsburgh…
Aaron Rodgers feels pressure and dances backwards into the end zone, where he's met by Khalil Mack. The veteran pass rusher knocks the ball free but Rodgers recovers it for a safety, preventing the touchdown.
Los Angeles is now on the scoreboard after a frigid offensive start.
    Q1 6:47 – Steelers 3, Chargers 0
Justin Herbert got away with one there…
On third-and-3 near midfield, he fires a pass intended for Keenan Allen directly at Joey Porter Jr., who could not secure the pick.
Los Angeles punts again and Pittsburgh will begin at its own 6-yard line.
I wonder if that was Jim Harbaugh wanting to make a statement after a week’s worth of narratives about the Chargers’ banged-up offensive line against the Steelers’ defensive front.
It worked, eventually, but that was risky — and doesn’t change the fact that the Steelers still have the advantage in that matchup.
