With just 11 days left for the start of the Ashes series, every player from the squad, barring Usman Khawaja, were due to be involved in Sheffield Shield cricket, to keep themselves match ready for the gruelling series.
Among the star performers on Day 1 of the latest round was Mitchell Starc, who picked up 4/91 on Day One for Steve Smith-led New South Wales (NSW) against Victoria in Sydney. Starc picked up 4/91 as Victoria ended the day on 340/7. Starc's bowling partner, Josh Hazlewood, went wicketless, but he will have a crack once again on Day 2 to make amends. Unlike Starc, who went for over five an over, Hazlewood kept it tight, conceding just 54 runs from his 18 overs.
Other than Starc, Nathan Lyon (2) and Sean Abbott (1) were among the wickets. However, it was out of favour batter Peter Handscomb, who stole the show with the bat with a sublime 104.
In the other game between Tasmania and South Australia, Jake Weatherald, who has earned his maiden Test call-up, was dismissed for just 23, while Beau Webster made just 13 in Tasmania's 209.
In reply, Travis Head could not make the best of his chance as he was dismissed for just nine, with Webster getting the big scalp, while Alex Carey is unbeaten on 25. South Australia trail Tasmania by 121 runs with seven wickets in hand at the end of Day One.
The first Ashes Test will get underway from November 21 in Perth.
