Emergence of TreVeyon Henderson more good news for surging Patriots – USA Today

FOXBOROUGH, MA – TreVeyon Henderson entered November with one touchdown to his name over the first nine games of his career.
Since Sunday, Nov. 9, however, the New England Patriots running back has sextupled that total.
Henderson scored three times on “Thursday Night Football” against the New York Jets, as the Patriots rolled to a 27-14 victory, their eighth straight win. The performance came on the heels of a two-touchdown, 147-yard day on the ground against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers four days earlier.
The overall youth movement within the Patriots’ offense took another step forward in Thursday’s win. Quarterback Drake Maye, in his second season, continued his level of play that places him squarely in the MVP conversation. Rookie left tackle Will Campbell, the fourth overall pick in April, has morphed into a reliable blind-side protector (with typical growing pains, such as being thrown around by Myles Garrett).
But Henderson, the rookie running back, took more time to find his footing in the pros. Rather, he merely needed an opportunity.
Rhamondre Stevenson missed his third straight game with a foot injury, but the Pats haven’t missed him because of Henderson’s emergence.
Compared to his showing in Tampa, Henderson was far less prolific against the Jets, averaging just 3.3 yards per carry (19 rushes, 62 yards). His scores on Thursday were less explosive, too. His offensive line pushed him into the end zone for the Patriots’ first touchdown in the second quarter and he scored another 7-yard touchdown later in the quarter.
Henderson has established himself as an emergency valve for Maye when the quarterback is in need of a checkdown. That was especially clear in the third quarter, as Maye dropped back in the red zone with nowhere to throw. Emerging with nobody around him in the end zone, Henderson easily caught Maye’s first touchdown pass of the night.
It was Henderson’s third total, as he joined Rob Gronkowski – honored by the team Thursday after he signed a one-day contract to officially retire as a Patriot on Nov. 12 – as the only Patriots rookies in team history with three touchdowns in a game.
Henderson is less than a year removed from winning a national championship at Ohio State, where he formed a formidable backfield combination with Quinshon Judkins, a fellow second-round pick (they actually went two picks apart, Judkins 36th to the Cleveland Browns and Henderson 38th to New England).
His first touch as a professional came on a kickoff return in the first preseason game against the Washington Commanders. Henderson took it 100 yards to the house.
Good things continue to happen for New England when the ball is in the rookie’s hands.
