MITCHELL KERNELS
— The Mitchell Kernels volleyball team earned its first state tournament berth since 2018 by sweeping Spearfish 25-12, 25-15, 25-22 in the Class AA SoDak 16 on Thursday night. Led by strong offensive efficiency (.376 hitting), standout performances from eighth-grader Nia Talley (11 kills) and senior Addie Siemsen (9 kills, 26 assists), Mitchell dominated both at the net and from the service line, recording 10 aces and nine total blocks. The Kernels (16-8) advance to the Class AA State Volleyball Tournament in Rapid City, where they will face top-seeded Harrisburg on November 20 at Noon CST.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— No. 16 Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball will be at Hastings on Saturday at 2 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball will be at Hastings on Saturday at 3:45 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan football ends the season on Saturday when they host Hastings at Joe Quintal Field at 1 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball lost 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-21) to No. 1 seed Northwestern on Wednesday night in the semifinals of the GPAC Tournament. The loss drops the Tigers to 18-11 overall as DWU awaits a potential National Tournament invite when the NAIA Selection Show airs this coming Monday at 4 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State volleyball swept Kansas City 3-0 (25-19, 25-19,25-20) on Thursday to stay perfect in the Summit League at 15-0 in the conference. Sylive Zgonc led the Jacks with 18 kills on 35 attempts and a .400 hitting percentage. SDSU ends the regular season hosting North Dakota on Tuesday at 7 pm
— South Dakota State football looks to end a three-game losing streak on Saturday when they host No. 13 Illinois State at 2 pm. The Jacks enter the matchup with a 7-3 overall record and a 3-3 mark in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Illinois State, meanwhile, is on a three-game winning streak that has the Redbirds 7-3 overall and with a 4-2 record in conference play. The Jackrabbits have dropped three games in a row in the same season for the first time since 2013.
— South Dakota State women’s basketball travels to Rapid City to face Montana on Saturday at 7 pm CST.
— South Dakota State women’s soccer will face Iowa in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at 5 pm in Iowa City. The Jackrabbits captured The Summit League Championship on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Oral Roberts. SDSU makes its ninth NCAA Tournament appearance. The Jacks lost in the NCAA First Round to Minnesota a season ago 2-0. Iowa earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after an 11-4-4 overall record, including a 6-2-3 mark in Big Ten Conference. Iowa was ranked 21st in the most recent Coaches Top 25 Rankings.
— South Dakota State men’s basketball kept it close at Oregon on Wednesday night, ultimately losing 83-69. The Jackrabbits were down six at halftime and cut the deficit down to one on multiple occasions late in the second half. Joe Sayler and Luke Haertle led SDSU with 14 points, while Kalen Garry added 13 points. The Jacks host Peru State on Monday at 7 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD women’s basketball improved to 4-0 on the season with a 72-71 win at Kansas State on Thursday night. Tori Schlagel had a team-high 15 points to lead five Coyotes in double figures. USD will be at Idaho State on Sunday at 3 pm CST.
— USD volleyball will be at Oral Roberts on Saturday at Noon.
— USD football ends the regular season on Saturday at Southern Illinois at Noon.
— USD men’s basketball hosts Western Michigan on Sunday at 1 pm.
HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
— Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy capped an undefeated 12-0 season by defeating Elkton-Lake Benton 46–22 to win the Class 9AA state football championship in Vermillion on Thursday night. Senior quarterback Riley Tschetter led the Phoenix with 318 total yards and four touchdowns, earning the Joe Robbie MVP award. Luke Peters scored three touchdowns and had 138 all-purpose yards, earning Outstanding Back honors, while Tate Sorensen was named Outstanding Lineman. Freeman set the tone with a 73-yard touchdown on the game’s first play and pulled away with 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 37–14 halftime lead. The Phoenix were perfect in the red zone (6-for-6), forced two turnovers, and had four sacks. Tschetter threw for 315 yards, spreading the ball to seven receivers, including big nights from David Walter (113 yards) and Easton Tschetter (77 yards). Elkton-Lake Benton’s offense was led by quarterback Colt Beck, who accounted for all three Elks touchdowns.
— Dell Rapids St. Mary’s completed a perfect 12-0 season with a dominant 54-6 win over Avon to claim the Class 9B state championship. The Cardinals erupted for 30 points in the first quarter, highlighted by two long touchdown runs from Lincoln LeBrun, who finished with 154 yards and was named Outstanding Back and Joe Robbie MVP. St. Mary’s forced six turnovers, turning two into defensive touchdowns, while quarterback Trimmier Hanson added a rushing score and a 63-yard TD pass.

— Shohei Ohtani won his fourth MVP award in a unanimous vote for the National League honor and Aaron Judge earned the American League MVP for the third time. Ohtani won an MVP for the third straight year, his second in the NL with the Los Angeles Dodgers after two in the AL with the Los Angeles Angels. All four have been unanimous. Judge became the New York Yankees’ fourth three-time winner, edging out Seattle’s Cal Raleigh with 17 first-place votes to 13 for the switch-hitting catcher.
— Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase has pleaded not guilty to charges that he took bribes to help gamblers win bets on the pitches he threw. The 27-year-old three-time All-Star appeared in Brooklyn federal court Thursday. He was arrested earlier at JFK airport after returning to the country from his native Dominican Republic. Teammate and countryman Luis Ortiz pleaded not guilty Wednesday to similar charges.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
— Braden Smith scored 29 points, including 21 in the second half, as No. 2 Purdue beat No. 8 Alabama 87-80 on Thursday night in the first matchup of top-10 teams this season. Trey Kaufman-Renn added 19 points and 15 rebounds for Purdue, who notched the school’s first road win against a top-10, non-conference opponent since 1982.

— Quarterback Brock Purdy returns to the starting lineup for the San Francisco 49ers this week after missing six games with a toe injury. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan announced Thursday that Purdy will start against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
— Former NFL WR Antonio Brown has been released from a Miami jail a day after pleading not guilty to second-degree attempted murder. The 37-year-old Brown is accused of firing shots after a celebrity boxing match in Miami on May 16. Brown left the Correctional Center after a judge set his bail at $25,000 and ordered him to wear a GPS ankle monitor while awaiting trial. He could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

— College Football Playoff selection committee chairman Mack Rhoades has been replaced by Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek following an announcement that Rhoades had stepped down from the role and taken a leave of absence as the athletic director at Baylor while the school investigates unspecified allegations against him. The allegations against Rhoades do not involve Title IX, student-athlete welfare or NCAA rules violations, and do not involve the football program.
