AUBURN (WGME) – Lost Valley Ski Area in Auburn transformed into a winter wonderland Monday night as children enjoyed free skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing.
The nonprofit WinterKids put together the free event.
The organization has been getting Maine children into the outdoors for 25 years now, bringing people together around winter sport opportunities.
"We want winter to be approachable and accessible to everybody and that includes winter sports and winter recreation, so this night we welcome the community," executive director of WinterKids Courtney Holub said.
Instructors were on hand to help the kids try the activities.
Families also got to enjoy a storywalk, snow sculpting, snow painting, and wrapped it up by bundling up with some hot chocolate.
"We like being here and we were skiing and sledding down the little mountain. We were enjoying hot coco and s'mores, just hanging out and having a fun time," one attendee said.
Evergreen Credit Union, a major partner of the event, says it's important for kids to get outside during the cooler months.
"It's a celebration of welcoming winter, Maines longest season, getting kids out there to show them what they can do during the winter, and keeping them busy while making really good memories," communications specialist at Evergreen Credit Union Emma Pierce said.
Monday’s “Welcome to Winter” event is just the start.
With more snow in the forecast, WinterKids hopes this event will be an introduction for these children's new favorite season.
