COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — 'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the town, there were sports fans recalling how this year went down.
The trophies were stored in the lobby with care in the hopes that more trophies soon would be there.
The new year began with the most familiar of foes, as the Buckeyes beat Oregon to capture the Rose pay back for the regular season game that they stole. Yes, revenge is a dish best served in a bowl.
But the bracket was rough. In fact, it was rotten playing Texas in Texas in a bowl full of Cotton.
A defense was quite needed, but not from a lawyer. When the game's on the line, all you need is Jack Sawyer.
So off to Atlanta for the championship game, the Ohio State Buckeyes against Notre Dame. The Irish played well, but they ran out of luck because Jeremiah ain't a bullfrog. Thank God he's a Buck.
After hoisting the trophy with a story to tell, it was name after name read by Roger Goodell. Fourteen players drafted, a record, they claim. Roger whistled and hugged them and called them by name.
Now Emeka, now Simmons, DJ and Tyleik, on Howard, on Quinshon, on Tre, and JT, to the top of the league to the top of them all. Thanks for the title. Good luck in the fall.
But as Winter pressed on, a team dressed in blue was actually welcome to play in The Shoe. 94,000 were beaming with pride as the Blue Jackets fired their cannon outside.
Scottie Scheffler came to Dublin, and he went back-to-back, winning $4 million and the handshake from Jack. Good for Scottie, good for golf. But it's kind of a shame if you're writing a poem and need to rhyme his last name.
Moving on, the Crew battled injuries and sadly discovered that once you lose Cucho, it's hard to recover. They lost to their rivals, ending Nagbe's career, and then lost their coach to the Scottish Premier.
But the capital city is gaining a team as professional football is picking up steam. Next spring, the Aviators debut and take flight. So put on those shades because the future is bright.
And then there were high schools when the season was through. Westerville North was the best of all teams in D2, and the girls at Pickerington Central were the best in the state. The Tigers were more than just good. They were great.
See, that's a Tony the Tiger reference when it comes to bad puns, I'm a serial offender.
Bishop Watterson reigned as the best in their sport, while orange pulled a double on the field and the court.
And finally to Michigan. How should I proceed? When you planted a flag, you planted a seed. It grew for twelve months till your fate was revealed. Now the victory party takes place on your field.
A year full of memories and championships. Merry Christmas to all. Here's to 2026.
