"Harshit Rana got a higher first-class score than Shivam Dube": Former Aussie players argue over concussion substitute controversy – Crictoday

Former Australia captain Aaron Finch mocked England skipper Jos Buttler’s statement at the toss during the fifth T20I against India, where he humorously referred to all the bench players as ‘impact subs.’ This came after the concussion sub-controversy in the previous match in Pune, where Harshit Rana replaced Shivam Dube and took three wickets, helping India seal the series.
The decision to allow Rana as a concussion substitute drew heavy criticism from English fans and pundits, particularly targeting match referee Javagal Srinath for permitting a frontline pacer to replace a batting all-rounder.
England had no response on the field, losing the final T20I by 150 runs after India posted a massive 247. Finch defended India, suggesting that even if England had used all their players, they wouldn’t have chased down 250.
“It’s challenging to deal with a concussion substitute because you only have four other players available, and usually, one will be a wicket-keeper, one a batter, one a bowler, and one an all-rounder. I get the frustration, but I also understand India’s perspective. If Harshit Rana is the closest player who can match Shivam Dube’s role, then there’s not much more they could have done,” Finch explained on ESPN’s Around the Wicket.
He added, “When Jos Buttler listed the names, they were chasing 250, yet they were bowled out for under 100. Even if they had used all 15 players, it still might not have made a difference.”
Former Australia batter Callum Ferguson, also on the panel, argued that the substitution shouldn’t have been approved due to the significant difference in roles between the players.
Ferguson commented, “I thought that decision was quite unreasonable. There’s no way it should have been allowed. They needed a batter to come in, not Rana, because looking at his stats, he’s not an all-rounder.”
Finch quickly responded, “In fact, he’s got a higher first-class score than Shivam Dube.”
Harshit Rana has a first-class century and averages 34 in red-ball cricket, while Dube has four hundreds, with a high score of 121, just shy of Rana’s best.
Aaron Finch and Rana were teammates at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) during the 2022 IPL season.
