IND vs ENG 1st ODI Live Score: Gill, Axar keep India on track of run-chase in Nagpur

India vs England Live Updates: ICC Champions Trophy is less than 15 days away and here we have India, the two-time champions and England, the 2019 world champions on the heels of taking on each other in a three-match series in a format, that might feel left out amid the magnanimous devastation caused by T20 cricket and the old-world charm of Test cricket. But both teams lost their most recent ODI assignments, hence, there might be a little work to do on that front for them. India are coming off 4-1 T20I series win but have their senior pros Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli returning and similarly for England, they have Joe Root coming back to the ODI fold for the first time since 2023. It promises to be a humdinger. Follow all the live updates for the IND vs ENG 1st ODI-

Axar Patel is also in good touch. He is string at over run-a-ball and this looks to be over quickly now.
The vice-captain raises his bat as he gets to his fifty. A solid knock from him at No.3 in the absence of Virat Kohli. He punches this to sweeper cover to bring up his fifty in 60 balls. India well on track here.
Gill is struggling a bit in the middle with what looks like a hamstring issue. He was seen grimacing in pain after a sweep to Adil Rashid.
Axar Patel’s promotion has turned out to be a good move for India. He took on Bethell and has looked strong so far for his 21. India are racing away to the target pretty quickly. They are nearly 100 runs away with all the time in the world in their hand.
Shreyas is gone. Jacob Bethell gets the much-needed wicket. He traps Shreyas in front as the batter missed a sweep. He reviewed it but to no avail. There is no bat or glove and it is plumb in front. Axar is in at No.5 ahead of KL Rahul, probably due to left-right combination.
Shreyas has got to his fifty. A gift on his pads from Bethell as he guides it to behind to fine-leg for a four. Iyer is looking pretty solid here.
The powerplay is done. Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer are doing good recovery work after the fall of the two openers. They have put 52 for the third wicket as India ended the powerplay 71/2.
Shreyas has got off to a good start. He has slammed two fours and two sixes in his first 10 balls. He is on 23 from 10 deliveries as India look to recover from a shaky start.
India captain Rohit Sharma once again flopped with the bat. He departed after scoring two runs off seven deliveries. India are 19/2
Yashasvi Jaiswal departed after scoring 15 runs off 22 balls. Ace pacer Jofra Archer was extremely disciplined with his line and length and had the last laugh in the end. The southpaw survived on a couple of occasions before they surrendered. India are 19/1 after 4.3 overs.
The Indian openers are out in the middle. It’s Yashasvi Jaiswal who is opening with Rohit Sharma as Gill will come at No.3 in place of Virat Kohli.
England have been bowled out for 248. Kuldeep Yadav gets his first of the match. Indian bowlers did good work and have reaped the rewards.
Jadeja gets another one. He cleans up Adil Rashid to take his third wicket of the match. With this, he gets to his 600 international wickets.
Jadeja traps Bethell in front. The umpire initially gave it not-out but the Indians reviewed and got it overturned on it. The only doubt was whether it was going over, but it is hitting the wickets. Bethell goes after a fifty. England 220/8 after 42.4
Another one down as Mohammed Shami cleans Brydon Carse up on his return for another spell. England struggling big to bat the complete 50 overs now. Adil Rashid is in with Bethell.
He has got his third on debut. Liam Livingstone edges an attempted pull behind to KL Rahul. England six down now with 200 still a bit away.
Axar removes England captain Buttler for 52. The English captain top-edges this to a backward square leg, where Hardik takes it easily.
Buttler brings up his fifty. This is his first fifty in ODIs in India. England are now recovering well and will look to keep wickets in hand.
England are in a bit of a hole as they are four down now for 135 after 24 overs. Captain Buttler is holding one end up, while Bethell is in middle from the other end. England need to play out these middle overs and try to keep wickets in hand before a flourish later.
The repair job began very slowly but Joe Root and Jos Buttler have rebuilt the innings nicely here for England. Buttler and Root have brought out sweeps and reverse sweeps to find gaps against the Indian spin duo and have been successful so far.
Harshit Rana on debut has two wickets in the same over. Rana bounced Duckett out with Yashasvi Jaiswal running back from short mid-wicket to hold on to a smashing diving catch. Two balls later, Rana had Harry Brook glancing one off gloves straight to the wicketkeeper KL Rahul and England have gone from 75/0 to 77/3.
Shreyas Iyer pulled the ball back in at the backward point, aimed a good throw and has his man. Phil Salt was sent back by his partner after he was halfway into his third run and was late. Salt depended on his partner’s call and didn’t watch the ball but was sent back very late.
Phil Salt has taken off! Phil Salt has smashed a 6,4,6,4,0,6 off Harshit Rana’s third over and England have reached 50 in just six overs. Salt was being patient enough before he launched an attack on Harshit, who tried to bounce out his former KKR teammate but the right-hander is latching onto anything and everything now.
Harshit Rana was erratic on his debut in the first over and gave away a couple of boundaries but came back to bowl a maiden over. Shami began the proceedings with a maiden over as well. Salt and Duckett both have picked their deliveries to hit while being patient enough to go after everything.
Kohli-sans India are in the field and Mohammed Shami has the new ball. Shami will be opening the bowling and India will hope to get early wickets with debutant Harshit Rana bowling alongside him. England openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett will aim for a good start for England.
It’s a decently sized ground with 69m and 68m boundaries on either side with a 75m straight boundary. The surface is rock-hard as Graeme Swann bends down to check. With the sun baking down, the wicket will be dry and there are runs to be hand but it will take a turn later on. There will be dew but if the batting side scores big, 300-plus could be a challenging run-chase. Should be a good contest, especially for the batters.
Playing XI: Ben Duckett, Philip Salt(w), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler(c), Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Saqib Mahmood

Playing XI: Rohit Sharma(c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul(w), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami
England skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and the visitors have opted to bat first. England haven’t been good chasers in ODIs in recent times apart from one match where Liam Livingstone went berserk against the West Indies and on a hot and sultry day in Nagpur. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma wanted to field first and both teams got what they wanted.
A huge huddle in the Indian camp. A couple of Indian players have gotten their caps. Yashasvi Jaiswal has gotten his cap as he will be making his debut in the ODIs having established himself as a solid opener in T20Is and Tests while Harshit Rana also makes his debut, now in third format in a row in a space of three months.
Joe Root has returned for England in the white-ball side for the first time since 2023 and since he is coming off a sensational SA20 for the Paarl Royals, the visitors will hope that he can get off the blocks straight away.
India have their seniors returning for the ODIs after a little break following the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in which some of those did play Ranji games. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant all are back for India.
India will be up against England in the first ODI of the three-match series at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur on Thursday, February 6. England haven’t had a great run in the ODIs in recent times but so do India and the visitors will be keen for redemption. Welcome to our live coverage of the IND vs ENG 1st ODI from Nagpur-
