Jasprit Bumrah has been officially ruled out of India’s squad for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower back injury, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed late on Tuesday night. After weeks of uncertainty surrounding his fitness status, the Indian pace spearhead’s absence from the prestigious tournament has now been confirmed.
Following the confirmation of Bumrah’s injury, the BCCI named 23-year-old pacer Harshit Rana as the replacement for the star bowler in the final 15-man squad. Rana’s inclusion in the squad is a significant opportunity for the young pacer, who will now be part of India’s campaign in the upcoming Champions Trophy.
Selection changes: Varun Chakaravarthy in, Yashasvi Jaiswal out
In another surprising twist to the selection process, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been excluded from the final squad. Despite being named in the provisional squad, Jaiswal will not feature in the Champions Trophy.
Instead, the selectors have opted for 33-year-old mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, who has been included in the final squad as Jaiswal's replacement. Chakaravarthy’s inclusion adds a new dimension to the Indian bowling attack as the team heads into the tournament.
BCCI’s official statement
The BCCI issued an official release regarding the changes to India’s squad, saying, “Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower back injury. The Men's Selection Committee has named Harshit Rana as Bumrah's replacement. Team India have also named Varun Chakaravarthy in the squad. The spinner will replace Yashasvi Jaiswal who was initially named in the provisional squad.”
