It is with heartfelt appreciation that we announce the retirement of News 9 Sports Director Dean Blevins.
For over 40 years, including 28 years with us, Dean has been a cornerstone of Oklahoma’s sports broadcasting community.
His dedication and passion for the job have made a lasting impact on both his colleagues and viewers alike.
“Health’s great, family’s great, life’s great. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have enjoyed and survived being in sports media 41 years – 28 of them here at News 9,” Dean said in his announcement. “After extending 1-year contracts, 5 times, I’ve decided to hang it up, effective July 1. It’s been a great run. Better and longer than deserved.”
Dean will continue covering sports for News 9 until the end of June.
“For now, you’ll still hear me on the radio and I’ll see you126 more days. I’ve got another Thunder win to report and an NBA Championship parade to help organize,” Dean said.
A Life Devoted to Sports
Sports have always been a significant part of Dean’s life.
Dean began his career in broadcasting after a successful athletic career as a quarterback. He played for the University of Oklahoma and was part of two national championship-winning teams under legendary coach Barry Switzer.
His athletic achievements were recognized early when he was named the Oklahoma High School Athlete of the Year after earning All-State honors in 1974 in football, basketball, and track at Norman High School.
This strong foundation in sports propelled him into the world of broadcasting, where he made a significant impact.
A Remarkable Broadcasting Legacy
Since 1997, Dean has been the heart of News 9 Sports. Over his remarkable 40-plus years in Oklahoma broadcasting, he has earned countless accolades, including two Emmy Awards and eight Oklahoma Sportscaster of the Year titles.
He has been a key figure in covering major sporting events, including University of Oklahoma football and basketball, as well as other significant sports stories across the state. He has earned respect from his peers and viewers for his professionalism, charisma, and in-depth understanding of sports.
Recently, it was announced that Dean will be inducted into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame in May, further cementing his legacy in the industry.
Transitioning Leadership to Toby Rowland
While it’s hard to imagine News 9 without Dean, we are thrilled to announce that Toby Rowland will step into the role of Sports Director. Toby is already a familiar face, known for his work as an analyst on the Oklahoma Sports Blitz and as the “Voice of the Sooners” for the past 14 seasons.
Toby’s broadcasting credentials include Emmy Awards and recognition for his outstanding sportscasts and reporting. With deep Oklahoma roots, a passion for sports, and years of experience at News 9 and in local radio, he is the perfect fit to continue the legacy Dean has built.
