This entire season for Frewsburg’s girls basketball team has been about getting back to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association final four.
With a win Saturday in the 4 p.m. Class C Far West Regional at Buffalo State University, the Bears will accomplish that goal.
Section V champion Keshequa stands in their way.
The Wildcats advanced to the state quarterfinals with a 66-65 win over Bloomfield in the Rochester area’s Class C crossover tilt Tuesday at Mount Morris High School.
Keshequa improved to 23-1 on the season, including 15 straight wins, for 46-year head coach Pete Piraino.
Frewsburg head coach Sierra Beaver said Wednesday evening after watching Keshequa’s game in person Tuesday.
The Wildcats were the No. 1 seed for the Section V Class C2 tournament, beating No. 8 Pavilion 63-39 in the quarterfinals, No. 5 Oakfield-Alabama 41-29 in the semifinals and No. 3 York 57-52 in the final.
Keshequa — the New York State Sportswriters Association’s top-ranked team — went through the regular season with just seven girls on the varsity roster, led by sophomore Braelyn Isaman, who had 23 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists in the Wildcats’ one-point win over Bloomfield.

Eighth-grader Alicia Wood had 13 points and six rebounds; sophomore Ryley Benner had 12 points and four assists; freshman Bree Benner had 9 points; and the team’s lone senior, Ava Thayer, had 7 points and six assists.

Frewsburg (18-5) — the state’s third-ranked team — would seem to have a leg up in experience on Keshequa, but that may not be the case.

The Bears start three seniors, a junior and a sophomore — all of whom played in last year’s 54-51 state semifinal loss to Section II’s Duanesburg.
Jadyn Trocki, Frewsburg’s sophomore point guard, leads the team in scoring at 18.0 points per game to go along with 6.6 assists, 4.5 steals and 4.2 rebounds. But the team has been at its best throughout its three playoff games when she is creating offense for teammates.

In a 70-50 Section VI quarterfinal win over No. 6 Cassadaga Valley, Jadyn’s senior sister Teghan led the Bears with 20 points, including six 3-pointers; senior Ava Jimerson had 19 points and eight rebounds; and junior Abery Harvey had 10 points. In that game, Jadyn handed out 12 assists.
In a semifinal against No. 2 Randolph — in a game that had all the makings of a state championship tilt — Ava Jimerson had 12 points and 16 rebounds, while Harvey also had 12 points. Again, Jadyn Trocki was the facilitator with eight assists to go along with 11 points.
And in last Saturday’s 66-32 victory over No. 5 Maple Grove, Jadyn Trocki had 18 points and 10 assists, while Teghan Trocki had 17 points, including five 3-pointers.
While Keshequa has nine sectional titles, it has never won a Far West Regional game. Frewsburg was 0-4 in Far West Regional games before beating Dundee/Bradford 75-67 last year.
