Stephen Carlson was elevated from the Chicago Bears’ practice squad in the beginning of October last season, but before getting a chance to play in the following Sunday’s game he suffered a season-ending collarbone injury.
With his contract expiring at the end of the year it could have been the end of the 2015 Jamestown High School graduate’s tenure with the Bears and possibly his NFL career, but the storied franchise made sure it was not on Thursday when they resigned the 28-year-old.
Carlson will be a part of a tight end room that includes Cole Kmet, Durham Smythe, Joel Wilson and Jordan Murray.
Last year, Carlson was unable to survive the final roster cuts, but was retained on the team’s practice squad. In his tenure with the Bears he has played just one regular season game and over the course of his career has played in 26 games with six catches for 62 yards and a touchdown.
