The talented right-arm pacer has joined Tynemouth Cricket Club, marking a significant milestone for Manipur’s growing cricketing fraternity.
Konthoujam’s journey to this historic feat has been one of relentless dedication and stellar performances in domestic cricket. Hailing from Patsoi Part IV, he has been an integral part of Manipur’s bowling attack since making his debut in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy season.
His impressive tally of 30 wickets in eight matches that season not only made him Manipur’s highest wicket-taker but also placed him among the top ten bowlers in India.
His dominance with the ball has only grown over the years. In the 2023-24 domestic season, he continued to spearhead Manipur’s bowling unit in both the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy.
His recent exploits in the 2024-25 season, where he claimed 42 wickets across all formats, further solidified his reputation as a formidable bowler in India’s domestic circuit.
With the English cricket season set to commence on April 19, Konthoujam faces a fresh challenge—adapting his skills to the conditions of northern England. English pitches, known for their swing and seam movement, will test his adaptability as he competes at a new level.
However, given his consistency and ability to thrive under pressure, the Manipur pacer is well-positioned to make an impact.
Konthoujam’s move to an English club under the ECB is a landmark moment for cricket in the Northeast, a region often overshadowed by powerhouse cricketing states.
Manipur has been producing talented bowlers in recent years, including left-arm pacer Rex Rajkumar Singh, who made headlines in 2018 with his extraordinary 10-wicket haul in a Cooch Behar Trophy match against Arunachal Pradesh.
Despite the challenges faced by teams from the Northeast, the cricketing structure in the region is evolving. While states like Assam and Tripura have traditionally been stronger, the overall standard of play in the Northeast is witnessing steady progress.
Konthoujam’s signing with Tynemouth Cricket Club is more than just an individual achievement—it represents a shift in perception and opportunity for aspiring cricketers from Manipur and the entire Northeast. As he gears up for his new journey in England, his success could inspire a new generation of cricketers from the region to dream bigger and push boundaries on the global stage.
