Bollywood actor, sports enthusiast, and entrepreneur Abhishek Bachchan was in Dublin over the weekend to showcase his investment in the European T20 Premier League (ETPL), a new franchise cricket league set to revolutionise the sport in Europe.
Sport for Business will carry an interview with Abhishek Bachchan and Warren Deutrom of Cricket Ireland tomorrow.
The ETPL, sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in January 2025, is a unique partnership between Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands. It features six franchise teams—two based in each country. This year, the inaugural season will be hosted in Rotterdam and Dublin, promising a summer of thrilling T20 cricket action.
Unlike other leagues typically supported by a single national board, the ETPL boasts the unified backing of Cricket Ireland, Cricket Scotland, and Cricket Netherlands, demonstrating unprecedented collaboration and commitment to growing the game across the region.
The ETPL offers the potential to engage with the entire European market beyond England, which has traditionally been the only global force in the sport.
Each new country the league connects with represents a fresh, untapped market, creating significant growth opportunities.
“I am incredibly excited to be a part of the European T20 Premier League,” said Bachchan.
“This league represents a fantastic opportunity to grow the game of cricket in Europe, fostering local talent and bringing world-class entertainment to fans.”
“The ETPL will showcase the best of European cricket and create a vibrant cultural experience for families and communities.”
    Dublin and Belfast
The Irish franchise teams will represent Dublin and Belfast, adding a competitive edge to the league.
Each team will feature eight home players alongside a development player representing a European country, ensuring a strong focus on nurturing local and regional talent.
The ETPL aims to support the ongoing development of cricket in Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands, providing a platform for emerging players to shine on a global stage.
The league will follow the format of other successful leagues, with franchise teams and a draft system, but it stands out as the first competition of its kind to involve three nations.
Beyond the on-field action, the ETPL is driven by a team of seasoned professionals boasting unparalleled expertise.
The league benefits from a wealth of knowledge and experience, from financial strategists and cricket experts to broadcasting veterans, top marketers, and KPMG advisors.
Abhishek Bachchan’s involvement further strengthens this powerhouse team, bringing a unique Bollywood perspective and global reach.
The European T20 Premier League is scheduled to take place from July 15th to August 3rd, 2025, promising a summer of unforgettable cricket action and family-friendly entertainment.
