ESCANABA – The Bay College Men’s Basketball Team continues to rack up awards as they had two players win the MCCAA Northern Conference Player of the Week for the final two weeks of the first semester. Josh Williams took the honors for his play in three games in the time period of December 2-8, while Joe Ofori received the recognition for his play during the week of December 9-15.
Williams helped lead the Norse to wins over Bryant and Stratton College (WI), Oakton Community College, and McHenry Count College all on the road. Against the Bobcats of Bryant and Stratton he finished with 11 points, five rebounds, and five assists. He followed that with a huge performance at Oakton Community College. Williams was 9-of-16 from the floor and 13-of-17 from the free throw line on his way to 32 points in a five-point victory. He also grabbed four rebounds and had four assists and a steal. The following day he ended up with nine points, three rebounds, four assists, and three steals in a win over McHenry County.
For the week Williams shot 51.5% overall and was 15-of 19-from the free throw line. He averaged 14 points, four rebounds, 4.1 assists, and one steal per game.
The following weekend the Norse hosted their annual Holiday Classic Tournament, and Ofori was a big part of two intense wins. Against Glen Oaks Community College he scored a game-high 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting. He pulled down eight rebounds, had four assists, and blocked one shot. On Saturday the Norse defeated Milwaukee Area Technical College. Ofori was good for 16 points, two rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a blocked shot.
Ofori shot the ball well in both games, ending with a 53.8% shooting percentage and was 12-of-13 from the free throw line. He averaged five rebounds, three assists, one steal, one block, and 22 points per game.
Williams and Ofori helped the Norse finish off their first semester slate of games on an eight-game win streak. Because of the strong play in recent weeks, the Norse have risen to No. 16 on the most recent NJCAA Division 2 poll, up two spots from the previous poll.
The Norse will be on a holiday break before travelling south to begin their second half of games. They will play at Palm Beach State in West Palm Beach, Fla. on January 3 and 4. They will face Roxbury Community College the first evening, before taking on the host school the next evening.
