The Boston Red Sox finally did what everybody surrounding the team has been thinking by locking down southpaw starter Garrett Crochet to a six-year, $170 million contract that starts in 2026.
Boston went out this offseason and acquired Crochet via trade with the Chicago White Sox after he had a stellar year in his first season as a starter. Red Sox fans have been very clear fans about their enjoyment of Crochet.
Crochet is already being called on to resurrect the Red Sox’ pitching problems of the last few seasons and be a durable option for not just this season but many to come.
The only problem with designating so much to a starter like Crochet is the uncertainty of how many innings he will be able to throw each year. As alluded to, he has spent just one season as a starter, and he pitched to a 3.58 ERA.
The 25-year-old southpaw features a really strong arsenal that includes a lively 100 MPH fastball and devastating offspeed pitch paired with a new cutter he’s been developing.
The Red Sox signed Crochet on a very team-friendly deal, and this tweet shows an example of a similar contract for another lefty. Max Fried has the body of work over Crochet, but Crochet has the youth and prime of his career left.
However, only time will tell how the nature of the deal will turn out, but the Red Sox are 1-4 to start the 2025 season, and already calling on Crochet heavily to be a savior.
A slight knock on the Red Sox front office of the past five years is the inability to make large time commitments to pitchers.
