In a move widely anticipated by fans and analysts, the Dallas Wings selected UConn star Paige Bueckers with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft on Monday night. Bueckers becomes the sixth player from the storied Huskies program to be taken first overall, joining the ranks of Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Tina Charles, Maya Moore, and Breanna Stewart—each of whom went on to become icons of the WNBA.
The selection marks a potential turning point for a Dallas franchise in search of a new identity and a return to relevance. Bueckers, 23, recently led UConn to a national championship and now carries the weight of high expectations as she transitions to the professional level.
The city of Dallas, still reeling from the stunning NBA trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February, wasted no time embracing its new potential star. Social media lit up with reactions to Bueckers’ selection, with fans drawing playful comparisons between the two star guards.

Beyond Bueckers, the Wings also added N.C. State guard Aziah James later in the draft. Dallas finished 11th in the WNBA standings last season and will now look to accelerate its rebuild with Bueckers as the face of the franchise.
