It was a big day in college basketball around the country as one of the top programs in the SEC, the Auburn Tigers, picked up a major commitment.
Emeka Opurum was the latest to take his talents to Auburn. The 7-foot center scored 9.4 points per game and also had 8.1 rebounds per game last season. He will be a big-time paint protector in the SEC, as he recorded 2.6 blocks per game as well. Opurum comes to the Tigers from Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kan.
Auburn Basketball’s official X account posted an exciting reaction from Coach Pearl as he found out the news: “anotha one.” The post was followed by a smiley face with sunglasses on.
When asked about his commitment to Auburn, Opurum told Auburn Live of On3.com “It’s a great environment. It has great people, great coaches, it was a great experience. It felt special because of how the coaches welcomed me. The school is bigger than I thought. The way and how friendly the people are, that surprised me.”
Big man KeShawn Murphy, a transfer from conference rival Mississippi State, has committed to the Tigers. Keyshawn Hall, a forward from Central Florida, is also among the latest additions to the Auburn basketball program.
The Tigers, of course, lost Jahki Howard to the transfer portal, and the trio of Johni Broome, Dylan Caldwell and Tahaad Pettiford are on their way out. However, there is still a chance Pettiford could return, as he has retained his NCAA eligibility.
