AdventHealth Redmond Sports Med and Rehab hosted a special kickball event in honor of Parkinson’s Awareness Month. The “Kicking Back Against Parkinson’s” event celebrates the progress of our patients with Parkinson’s disease and raises awareness about this potentially life-altering condition.
“It’s so much fun to be able to give a special gift to our community through this game,” said John Crawley, director of rehabilitation services at AdventHealth Redmond. “This is important not just for the participants, but for those helping and cheering everyone on.”
“At AdventHealth Redmond, we believe that every person with Parkinson’s disease can achieve more than they ever imagined,” said Crawley. “Our dedicated team trains patients to compete in an exciting game of kickball, showcasing their improved strength and balance. This event is not just a celebration of physical progress but also a testament to the resilience and determination of our patients.”
For many participants, this kickball game is a cherished memory, symbolizing their journey and proving that they can overcome challenges. It is a day filled with joy, camaraderie, and inspiration, highlighting the incredible capabilities of individuals facing Parkinson’s disease.
Parkinson’s disease affects nearly one million people in the United States, with about 90,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Symptoms include tremors, muscle stiffness, slow movement, and balance issues. Non-motor symptoms can include depression, sleep disturbances, and cognitive changes. There is currently no cure, but treatments such as medication, physical therapy, and surgical options can manage symptoms.
Parkinson’s Awareness Month is observed every April and is dedicated to raising awareness about Parkinson’s disease—a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement, balance, and coordination. The month is an opportunity to educate the public, promote understanding, encourage early diagnosis, and support individuals and families living with Parkinson’s.
