What is this nonsense about Angel Gomes being small? He’s the same height as Messi, Maradona and Scholes, who seem to have done alright.
    Steve
People said the same about Modrić, and we all know how that panned out!
    Vish
May I present Paul Scholes. Argument over. Next…
    Andy
Please tell Keith, Orlando, that someone forgot to tell Makelele or Kante about their height being an issue. Probably two of the best No.6s the Premiership has seen.
    Tunde
Right, back to the news of the day.
Arsenal fans will have woken up to the news this morning that Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes has signed a new long-term contract to keep him at the club until 2029.
The Brazilian was already under contract until 2027, but this new deal reflects his importance to manager Mikel Arteta's project at Emirates Stadium.
Gabriel, 27, has been a key player for Arsenal since joining the club in a £27m move from Lille in 2020, making 210 appearances in all competitions.
"I arrived here as a young player and after almost five years I'm so happy and I've learned a lot," Gabriel said.
"I'm so proud of myself, it's an amazing journey, and I'm so happy to continue it. I hope I win some trophies with this club, because I love this club and my family loves the club, too."

OK, we are getting in some messages on Keith's comment about Angel Gomes, saying he would never make it in the Premier League because he is too small.
The England midfielder is around 5ft 5ins, according to info on the web.
We will have a look at the stats on Premier League's best-performing diminutive players, but while we bring those together, we would love to know your favourites.

Please, please, please let Kudus go West Ham. When he can be bothered to play he is a great player, unfortunately since coming back from the last African Cup of Nations he has been pretty much invisible.
    Daniel
Callum Wilson joined Newcastle United in 2020 after scoring 67 goals in 187 appearances for Bournemouth.
He scored 40 goals in 79 league games in his first three years at Newcastle, including 18 goals during the 2022-23 season to help them qualify for Champions League, before signing a new two-year contract in 2023.
However, that deal is set to expire at the end of this month, with the club now announcing they are in talks over a new contract for the 33-year-old England striker.
Wilson had a season ravaged by injuries last term and did not score a single league goal, despite making 18 appearances in the top flight.
His only goal in the 2024-25 season came in the FA Cup – against Birmingham in the fourth round.
Wilson also made substitute appearances in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg and final as the Magpies ended a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy by beating Liverpool.

I have no idea why Everton aren't trying hard to get Gomes. Can play in most midfield positions, is young, better than the players we already have, and most importantly, he's available for free. Madness we don't even seem to be considering him.
    David, Liverpool
Angel Gomes is small. This goes against the current physicality norm in the Premier League. I'm surprised Spurs are interested.
    Keith, Orlando
I’d like to see Gomes come back to Old Trafford. Given his potential to play anywhere across the midfield is the key and I think he would fit well to Amorim's style. The fact he’s a free is a bonus as we could save some money for other more pressing areas of the team while also bringing in some quality.

    Newcastle United
Newcastle United say they are negotiating a new contract with England striker Callum Wilson after announcing their retained list of players for the upcoming season.
Wilson has not been included in that retained list as the 33-year-old is out of contract at the end of this month.
But the club confirmed that they are in discussions about extending the 33-year-old's stay at St James' Park, and have also opened negotiations with goalkeeper John Ruddy, whose contract is also due to expire on 30 June.
"New contracts could still be agreed," the club said.
Newcastle confirmed that Jamal Lewis will leave upon the expiry of his contract this summer, while Lloyd Kelly’s loan move to Juventus will become permanent for an undisclosed fee.
All other first-team players are retained, with an option activated to retain goalkeeper Mark Gillespie, while contract extensions were recently concluded for Fabian Schar, Emil Krafth and Dan Burn.
"Newcastle United extends a sincere thank you to all players leaving the club this summer and wishes them the best for the next step in their careers," it said.
Sticking with the Club World Cup theme, according to the Athletic, Manchester City have agreed a deal to sign Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves.
It says the full-back is set to join Pep Guardiola's side in a transfer worth around £33m and on a five-year contract with the option of a further year.
City have been operating without a specialist left-back since the departure of Benjamin Mendy, who made his last appearance for the club in August 2021.
Oleksandr Zinchenko, Joao Cancelo and Josko Gvardiol are among the players who have had extended stints in the position.
City would look to complete the transfer before 10 June in order for Ait-Nouri to be available for the group stage of the Club World Cup.
BBC Sport's Sami Mokbel has also reported that West Ham have received multiple enquiries from clubs interested in signing forward Mohammed Kudus.
Sources say that Chelsea are among the clubs to have engaged in early discussions with the Hammers over the Ghana international, who has a release clause of £85m.
The prospect of at least one Chelsea player heading across London as part of the deal has been discussed.
Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez is among the players to have been mentioned during early talks.
The Blues, however, are not the only club to have expressed an interest in Kudus, with at least one other Premier League side and several overseas monitoring his situation.
It is understood Kudus is open to leaving London Stadium before next season, particularly to a club that can provide him with Champions League football.

Remember, Chelsea and Manchester City need to complete any transfer deals by Tuesday (10 June) if they want to include those signings in their squad for the upcoming Club World Cup.
This unique, early transfer window, which opened on 1 June, closes on 10 June for that very reason.
For any Chelsea or Man City fans, are there any possible transfers you want done to get in that squad?

Let's do a quick round-up of the main deals we are tracking this morning…
Chelsea are currently in talks with AC Milan over signing France goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
The Italian club value Maignan at about £25m but the Blues do not want to meet that price and are in talks about a lower fee.
The 29-year-old has been a regular for Milan since joining on a five-year contract from Lille in 2021.
He has also been first choice for France since Hugo Lloris retired from international football in January 2023, and has won 30 caps since his debut in 2020.
Sources have told BBC Sport that Maignan would be interested in a move to Stamford Bridge.

    BBC Sport reporter

Right, we will keep an eye on that one. We would definitely be interested to hear from any fans who would like to see Angel Gomes at their club.
    Right, let's move on…

Born in Edmonton in north London, Angel Gomes came through the ranks at Manchester United.
He made his first-team debut for the Red Devils in 2017, replacing Wayne Rooney in a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.
But after making just a handful of appearances for United, he left the club in 2020 to join French side Lille on a five-year contract.
Gomes, who won the Fifa U-17 World Cup held in India in 2017, established himself as a regular in France and lifted the French Super Cup in 2021 – bagging 10 goals and 19 assists in 134 appearances for Lille.
The youngster an integral part of the England U21s victory at the 2023 Euros, and helped Lille to the Conference League quarter-finals the following season and the last 16 of the Champions League during the most recent campaign.
Lille finished fifth in Ligue 1 this season, and will play in the Europa League in 2025-26.
Gomes had already confirmed on Instagram that he would become a free agent when his contract with Lille expired this month, sparking rumours of a return to Old Trafford, external while Tottenham and West Ham were also interested.

    BBC Sport reporter

Angel Gomes is a bit of a puzzle.
He left Manchester United after failing to break into the starting line-up, but rose to prominence at Lille in both Ligue 1 and European competition.
The 24-year-old also has international pedigree – helping England U21s win the Euros – and Lee Carsley was keen to move him into the senior set-up during his short time in charge.
So why have more Premier League sides not been linked with him?
Would you like to see Gomes at your club? He would be free, after all…
Stick with us and we will try to answer some of those questions, and please get in touch with your thoughts using the usual channels.

Marseille are in talks with England international Angel Gomes over a free transfer.
The midfielder is a free agent after leaving Lille in the summer and had attracted serious interest from Premier League clubs.
But the 24-year-old is in discussions with rival Ligue 1 side Marseille in a transfer that would see Gomes stay in France.
Discussions are said to be progressing very positively amid hope Marseille can seal his transfer in the coming days.
Gomes broke into the England set-up at the start of last season under interim head coach Lee Carsley, but is yet to feature under Thomas Tuchel.
Tottenham and West Ham were the clubs linked with Gomes but Marseille are now pressing ahead with their interest.
