The five-match Test series between India and England begins on June 20, marking the start of a new era for Indian cricket. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli having retired from Test cricket, the baton has passed to Shubman Gill, who takes charge of a young, relatively inexperienced squad.
India hasn’t won a Test series in England since 2007. Since then, four tours have yielded three series defeats and one drawn series (2-2 in 2021–22). Now, under a fresh captaincy and with limited experience in English conditions, the challenge is immense.
Only Three Indian Captains Have Achieved Test Series Wins in England
So far, only three Indian skippers have led the team to Test series victories in England:
Ajit Wadekar (1971): Guided India to its first-ever series win in England (1-0).
Kapil Dev (1986): Captained India to a dominant 2-0 victory.
Rahul Dravid (2007): Led India to their last series win in England with a 1-0 scoreline.
Gill will aim to join this elite list by breaking the 18-year jinx.

A New Legacy: Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy
In another historic move, the long-standing Pataudi Trophy, which began in 2007, will now be called the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy—honoring Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar and English pace icon James Anderson for their outstanding contributions to the game.

In 2007, India claimed the inaugural Pataudi Trophy by defeating England 1-0 on English soil. Since then, India has toured England four times, suffering three series losses and one drawn series (2-2) in 2021-22.
In 2025, captain Shubman Gill will lead the team with the challenge of ending this 18-year drought. Notably, the India-England Test series will now be played for the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy, replacing the Pataudi Trophy.
