FAIRHAVEN — Only a month into the new year brings news of another iconic Greater New Bedford restaurant closing its doors.
According to its website, The Ice House Sports Bar in Fairhaven has permanently closed.
For almost two decades,136 Huttleston Ave. has been slinging beers and good food to the neighborhood, with the Ice House known for its fresh seafood and pub-style offerings with live entertainment.
The sudden closure was announced by a note on the website saying “CLOSED PERMANENTLY. Customers, please visit Fathoms Waterfront Bar & Grille at 255 Popes Island, New Bedford, MA 02740, to redeem drink chips or gift cards.”

The Ice Chest opened in 2007 as a restaurant and live entertainment venue. In 2012, the president and owner of OceansFleet, Lars Vinjerud II, and Virginia Vinjerud purchased it, and changed its name to the Ice House Bar and Grille.
OceansFleet Fisheries, a New Bedford-based fishing company and seafood distributor, is the owner of the Ice House’s sister restaurant, Fathoms Waterfront Bar & Grille, located on Popes Island.
Along with the pub, the property boasts The Harpoon Room, an upscale dining area, and The Ice House Garage, a music venue.
At the Jan. 27 Fairhaven Select Board meeting, Jacob Galary appeared in front of the board to transfer the liquor license from the Ice House Inc. to SoCo Tavern. The board unanimously approved the transfer.
Galary noted that he would be listed as the manager of the new tavern and Mario Ribeiro as the owner. Ribeiro is a well-known name in the local restaurant scene, owner of BOCCA in Fairhaven and Cask & Pig in Dartmouth. According to information from the Registry of Deeds, no transfer of property has yet been recorded.
Galary said at the meeting he expects that renovations will take one to two months.
