The Andhra Cricket Association (ACA), at its Annual General Meeting in Vijayawada on 8 June, shared plans to rebuild women’s cricket in the state with a league modeled after the IPL. This time, the league will feature four teams, all independent of the men’s Andhra Premier League, which currently has six teams.
Confirming the news, an ACA official stated (as quoted by Cricbuzz): “The decision is a testimony to ACA’s focus on women’s cricket in the state. Our president, Kesineni Sivanath (a Lok Sabha member from Vijayawada), and secretary S Satish (a Rajya Sabha member), are clear about their vision for women’s cricket.”
The ACA will soon conduct a selection process to form a women’s committee responsible for overseeing related activities. Former India women’s captain Mithali Raj has been appointed as the convenor of women’s cricket in the state by the ACA.
Previously, the association had launched a three-team league for women cricketers called the Andhra Women’s T20 League, but it was discontinued in 2024.
With this new initiative to rebuild women’s cricket in Andhra, the ACA plans to conduct both the men’s and women’s leagues at the same venue in August, streamlining logistical and operational efforts. For now, the ACA will manage the women’s league itself, but in the future, it aims to introduce private franchises.
