After signing with the Los Angeles Angels in 2024 on a three-year, $33 million contract, relief pitcher Robert Stephenson looked to hit the ground running in Anaheim. He secured his payday after an excellent season in 2023 with both the Pittsburgh Pirates and Tampa Bay Rays. Stephenson put together a career season with a 3.10 ERA and 140 ERA+ in 52.2 innings pitched.
Unfortunately for Stephenson and the Angels, he has yet to make his debut. During Spring Training in 2024, it was revealed that Stephenson would need to undergo Tommy John surgery and would miss the entirety of the season. The recovery time from Tommy John typically ranges from 12 to 18 months, and as a result, his 2025 season was put into question as well.
The Angels recently received a positive update on the thirty-two-year-old. In an article from Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register, a major progression Robertson's rehab was announced.
“Right-hander Robert Stephenson, who is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, has been doing 'up-down' bullpen sessions, in which he takes breaks to simulate throwing multiple innings," he wrote.
Since signing with the Angels, Stephenson has yet to pitch an inning for them. In his career, however, he has pitched decently. Stephenson has a career ERA of 4.64 with a 1.337 WHIP and a 2.55 SO/BB ratio.
The Angels will mark the fifth club Stephenson has pitched in his decade in the big leagues. He is eligible to return from Tommy John Surgery in late May, and the hope is that he can be well into the swing of things by the summer.
