As India dominate the ongoing Headingley Test, former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has weighed in on the growing narrative surrounding Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket.
With fears swirling around the future of Indian Test batting post-Kohli; and with Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin also missing, Manjrekar called the panic “irrational,” backing the next generation to carry the momentum.

In the absence of Kohli and Rohit, a young Indian side led by Shubman Gill has taken firm control of the first Test in England. Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul led the way with brilliant second-innings centuries.
Pant became just the second wicket-keeper in Test history to score a hundred in both innings of a match.

Reacting to the stellar show by Pant and Rahul, Manjrekar hit out at the “what after Virat” discourse. The former India batter said that cricket remains the most attractive sport for young Indians and the talent pool is only growing.
“Cricket is by far the no 1 sport in India. There is tremendous incentive for young kids to take up cricket. Hence ‘What after Fab 4, or what after Virat’ is an irrational fear,” Manjrekar wrote on X.
His comments come even as fans continue to romanticize Kohli’s love for Test cricket. Kohli – after winning his first IPL trophy with RCB earlier this month – had famously rated that win “five levels below” Test cricket.

Despite losing Shubman Gill early on Day 4, India scored a big second-innings lead thanks to Pant and Rahul’s 195-run stand. Rahul’s century was his first in 18 months.
His century was a timely reminder of his red-ball class while Pant’s fearless strokeplay left England short on answers.
