Meanwhile, former American Leadership Academy wrestler Sage Mortimer placed fourth at 53 kilograms. Mortimer recently won the Under 23 world title in Tirana, Albania but was upset by Brianna Gonzalez in the semifinals by technical fall, 13-2. Then Mortimer bounced back to win her consolation semifinal bout before losing a wild match to Katie Gomez, 14-12, to finish fourth. Gonzalez, by the way, then upset top seed Felicity Taylor 6-5 to claim gold.
Terrell Barraclough, who became Utah Valley’s sixth All-American in program history by placing fifth in the 2025 NCAA wrestling championships, had a good tournament. Then Barraclough won his next three bouts in consolation to finish fifth in the men’s freestyle event.
Former Utah Valley wrestler Isaiah Delgaldo (70 kilograms) went 3-2 being knocked out one match before the placing rounds.
Utah Valley wrestling fans should be excited about the signing of Geronimo Rivera (61 kilograms), the 4-time state champion from Layton High School. The Wolverine commit competed in the Under-20 freestyle tournament winning several matches though he failed to place in the top eight.
Mountain View senior Glade Haman, who placed second in 5A state this year after winning a state title in 2024, also competed in the Under-20 event at 61 kilograms and went 2-2.
