The Astros are rolling, and are somehow even better without Yordan Alvarez, Kyle Tucker and Alex Bregman.
They came into Thursday’s game with the second-best record in the American League after a 5-3 win against the Rockies at Coors Field.
It might even be that they don’t need Alvarez back, as No. 15 prospect Shay Whitcomb began his MLB career with a 451-foot bomb in his debut Wednesday.
On Thursday, the Astros received encouraging news on Alvarez, who has been out since May 2 with a broken hand.
The recent news was that Alvarez suffered a setback in his rehab, and Astros general manager Dana Brown told the media on Tuesday that Alvarez’s rehab was shut down due to pain in his injured hand, just days before they were hoping to get him back in the lineup.
Today, however, the team received word from a hand specialist that following additional imaging, the main cause of his current pain is due to inflammation.
“The specialist also indicated that at this point in the recovery process, the small fracture that had been sustained is now a non-factor in the discomfort that Alvarez is currently experiencing,” the update read.
As a result, Alvarez reportedly received injections in his hand and will still be shut down from activity, but the timeframe has now shifted to a couple days’ rest, rather than anything more.
It has been a long and frustrating road to recovery for Alvarez, but the slugger can take solace that his Astros have been mashing without him.
Just yesterday, fellow 2022 World Series champion Jose Altuve passed Jeff Bagwell for second on the Astros’ all-time hit list, with Bagwell in attendance.
The positive update on Alvarez is only another bit of positive news in what has been a bounce-back couple of months for the slow-starting Astros.
