“Really nice. As I got into my spell, got more confident. Lots of turn and bounce, bringing variations into play and both edges (into play). Just adjusting my lines. If I bowl too wide, it can be an easy drive ball. Still have to keep the stumps in play, so went around the wicket. Something I work on. A bit of side spin, a bit of over-spin when needed, and then a scrambled seam ball that takes the outside edge. (On being part of this spin-bowling group) It is amazing. We work well as a spin quartet. We all bring something different. (On the chase) On a length, it looks pretty hard, so our batters have to dig in. If we can bat for long periods of time, we should knock these off.”
Rabeya Khan played a stunning counterattacking knock, smashing 43 off just 27 balls to lift Bangladesh to a respectable total of 178 after a prolonged struggle through the middle overs. Her late surge, supported by Sobhana Mostary’s composed half century, ensured Bangladesh had something to bowl at. England’s bowlers were exceptional in maintaining control throughout. Sophie Ecclestone (3/24), Charlie Dean (2/28), Linsey Smith (2/33), and Alice Capsey (2/31) shared the spoils in a disciplined collective effort. England now need 179 to win, but with Bangladesh’s spin attack awaiting them on a slow Guwahati surface, the chase promises to be anything but straightforward.
Sobhana Mostary has finally found some support in Rabeya Khan, who’s showing positive intent by rotating the strike and counterattacking when given width. The duo is trying to inject some much-needed momentum into Bangladesh’s innings after a long period of stagnation. With just five overs left, the question now is whether they can push towards a defendable total against this disciplined English attack that has maintained relentless pressure throughout.
A maiden international fifty for Sobhana Mostary! The young batter has shown great grit under immense pressure. There was a nervy moment when Amy Jones dropped her on 49 off Charlie Dean, but she steadied herself to reach the landmark a richly deserved one. Despite her effort, Bangladesh continue to crawl, struggling to rotate the strike or find boundaries as England’s bowlers keep things tight. It’s been a frustrating passage of play for Bangladesh, who need a late surge to post a competitive total.
Pressure finally tells as Charlie Dean removes Ritu Moni after a painfully slow 36-ball stay. Moni tried to break the shackles but ended up mistiming a lofted shot straight to Linsey Smith in the deep. Bangladesh continue to lose wickets at regular intervals, and the innings has lost all momentum. Sobhana Mostary, however, remains the lone warrior for the hosts, battling hard and inching closer to a well-deserved half-century on 47.
England’s bowlers have completely strangled the scoring rate, with Bangladesh managing just three runs in the last five overs. The run rate has dipped below one as the batters struggle to rotate strike. Ritu Moni is still yet to get off the mark after facing 16 deliveries, while Sobhana Mostary is trying to hold the innings together. England continue to press hard for wickets, but Bangladesh’s ultra-defensive approach is just about keeping them afloat for now.
Linsey Smith continues her stellar spell, conceding just eight runs in five overs and keeping Bangladesh tied down with remarkable control. At the other end, Sobhana Mostary was holding firm, while Shorna Akter tried to up the scoring rate. However, just as a small fightback seemed to be forming, captain Charlie Dean struck, Shorna’s attempted sweep resulted in a top edge that was smartly caught by keeper Amy Jones. Bangladesh now find themselves in trouble again at 85-4, with rebuilding to do once more.
Sophie Ecclestone strikes right after the drinks break to give England a crucial breakthrough. Sharmin Akhter, who looked well set on 30, nicks one behind while attempting a cover drive off a ball that bounced more than expected. Amy Jones takes a sharp catch behind the stumps, ending what was turning into a promising stand. Ecclestone finishes the over as a wicket-maiden, putting Bangladesh back under pressure.
Bangladesh are fighting back strongly through Sobhana Mostary and Sharmin Akhter, who are stitching together a steady partnership after early setbacks. Mostary has struck four boundaries in her fluent 18, while Sharmin looks solid on 25. The duo is rotating the strike well and finding a boundary almost every over, easing the early pressure. England will be desperate for a breakthrough to regain momentum.
After a promising start at 21-0 in the first three overs, Bangladesh have lost their early momentum as England’s bowlers tighten the screws. Captain Nigar Sultana Joty departs for a duck, falling to Linsey Smith, who continues her impressive form. A soft dismissal as Sultana’s mistimed push lobs straight to extra cover where Dean takes a sharp catch. England strike twice in quick succession to seize control.
Good comeback from Lauren Bell after an expensive previous over as she draws first blood for England. Rubya Haider departs after mistiming a lofted shot straight to Dunkley at mid-off. The ball held a touch in the surface, forcing the error, and Bell breaks the opening stand to put England on top early.
A quiet and watchful start from Bangladesh after being put in to bat first. The English bowlers have begun with discipline, keeping things tight and nearly finding success with a catch that almost carried in the opening over. Pressure evident on the Bangladeshi openers early on.
The two sides have met only once in Women’s ODI World Cup history. That encounter came in 2022 in Wellington, where England posted a 100-run win. The defending champions will aim to reaffirm their title credentials, while Bangladesh, buoyed by recent form, hope to pull off a giant-killing to enhance their reputation on the global stage.
