The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is not planning any expansion to the Women’s Premier League (WPL) as of now. The third edition of the tournament concluded recently, with Mumbai Indians winning their second title in three years. Meanwhile, this season enjoyed a huge growth in viewership numbers compared to the previous editions, with teams fighting hard to win the title.
The tournament has been on an upward trajectory ever since its inauguration, but according to the Chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Arun Dhumal, the BCCI have no current plans to add extra teams to the five-team competition.
“To further strengthen this tournament for the time being, we want to consolidate before we take a call on further addition of any team. There are no immediate plans (to add teams),” Dhumal said, as quoted by the PTI.
However, Dhumal said that the tournament's growth over the last three years is encouraging, and it has made its mark on the cricketing world.
“So, within three editions, WPL has grown phenomenally in terms of traction, for in-stadium attendance,” Dhumal said.
“All the broadcast numbers are very, very encouraging. And it has given new impetus to women’s cricket worldwide,” Dhumal added. “So, we are hoping this continues to grow. And this augurs very well for not only the tournament but women’s cricket in general,” he added.
Notably, this is the second disappointing news in a row for fans of women’s cricket in the country. Earlier, the BCCI, who’s hosting the Women’s ODI World Cup in India later this year in September-October, announced the venues for the marquee tournament. None of the venues are in tier one cities or any ground with a proven track record of good attendance for women’s games like the Chinnaswamy in Bengaluru or the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
The final will be held in Mullanpur, where reaching the ground is an inconvenience as it is quite far from the nearest city that is Chandigarh. Not a single game has been played by the Indian women’s team in that stadium. The other venues proposed for the competition are Indore, Thiruvananthapuram, Visakhapatnam, and Raipur in Chattisgarh.
