Blue Jays Announce Unfortunate Anthony Santander News Before Angels Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Toronto Blue Jays are on top of the AL East heading into Friday night, but outfielder Anthony Santander has not played a big role in their success. The 30-year-old is slashing just .179/.273/.304 with six homers and 18 RBI in 50 games this season.
The Blue Jays signed Santander to a five-year, $92.5 million contract in January, including a club option in 2030. The veteran spent his previous eight seasons with the Baltimore Orioles and smashed 44 homers and 102 RBI last year.
Santander hasn’t played since May 29 due to a shoulder injury, and the Blue Jays announced some negative news on that front before Friday’s bout with the Los Angeles Angels, via their social media.
The club transferred him to the 60-day IL. It also selected and activated right-handed pitching prospect Lazaro Estrada and optioned southpaw hurler Justin Bruihl to Triple-A.
Bruihl has allowed one earned run in 3.1 innings this season, while Estrada is 2-4 with a 4.75 ERA in 15 minor-league starts.
Toronto has won five straight games and is 8-2 in its last 10. The team is coming off a four-game sweep of the New York Yankees at home, which propelled it into first place. Both the Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays now trail it by one game in the standings.
Southpaw pitcher Eric Lauer (4-1, 2.60 ERA) will start for the Blue Jays on Friday against Angels right-hander Kyle Hendricks (5-6, 4.66 ERA). The game will start at 7:07 p.m. EST at the Rogers Centre.
