The Toronto Blue Jays’ 2025 season has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows. After a disappointing 2024 campaign marred by injuries and underperformance, the team aimed for a resurgence. Early in the season, they showed promise with a four-game winning streak from March 30 to April 2. However, inconsistency soon set in, leading to a 1-8 skid that raised concerns about the team’s depth and resilience.
The Blue Jays currently hold a 16-16 record, placing them third in the highly competitive AL East, three games behind the division-leading New York Yankees. Toronto has stayed in the mix despite an injury to veteran right-hander Max Scherzer in his first outing of the season.
On the injured list with right thumb inflammation, Scherzer has made just one start this season. On Friday, Blue Jays manager John Schneider revealed Scherzer is progressing, but still has to face live hitters before he can begin a rehab assignment (via Keegan Matheson of MLB.com).
Amid this news on Scherzer progressing but still being some time away from a return, the Blue Jays have agreed to sign former Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Spencer Turnbull to a major-league contract. Turnbull, 32, brings versatility to the team, having experience both as a starter and reliever.
Turnbull’s 2024 season was cut short due to a lat strain, leading to his placement on the injured list and subsequent free agency on October 31. Known for his diverse pitching arsenal, his flexibility is a valuable asset for the team’s pitching rotation.
Originally drafted in the second round of the 2014 draft, Turnbull made a significant impact in 2019 with 30 starts and 148.1 innings pitched. The Blue Jays’ decision to sign Turnbull aligns with general manager Ross Atkins’ recent comments about exploring external options to enhance the team’s depth (via MLB.com).
