The Oklahoma Sooners and head coach Brent Venables received concerning news on April 16 about a quarterback recruit.
Oklahoma’s four-star quarterback commit, Jaden O’Neal, has scheduled an official visit to Florida State on June 15, On3 reported.
Although committed to Oklahoma, the quarterback appears open to flipping. He’s playing his senior season at Mustang High School in Oklahoma, and already visited Tallahassee in the spring, 247 Sports reported. He made an unofficial visit in early April, but now he’s scheduled an official visit.
Florida is just one of several programs looking to flip O’Neal.
Seven experts at 247 Sports, still expect O’Neal to ultimately go to OU. But they’re making their predictions with medium confidence now. SI reported that O’Neal’s change of heart may be due, in part, to the Sooners continuing to recruit other quarterback prospects despite O’Neal’s commitment since June 2024.
During his junior year at Narbonne High School, O’Neal showed himself to be more of a traditional pocket passer, and completed 88/124 passes, SI reported.
As for this coming season, things are looking much brighter for the Sooners. Sports analysts at On3 are rating quarterback John Mateer at number 4 and number 6 on their top 10 lists, and are even considering that he might lead OU to the playoffs this season.
“This guy is unbelievable…” Ari Wasserman said. “There is a legitimate chance that this is the guy holding up the Heisman at the end of the year. And I don’t say that lightly. There is a legitimate chance that Oklahoma is a playoff team because of this guy next year”
