The Fairmont Cardinals scored 18 runs in the top of the first inning on their way to a 27-2 three-inning victory over the host Blue Earth Area Buccaneers on Tuesday, April 8.
Fairmont had their bats going and connected for 23 hits in the game.
BEA’s two runs came in the second inning when Sara Wirth walked, stole second, and scored on a double by Aubrey Skaden. Another double, this one by Lullianna Frank, brought home Skaden with the Bucs’ second run.
Ava Grant and Jessi James handled the pitching duties for BEA while Brylee Miller, Gabby Leiding and Lexi Sundeen each pitched one inning for Fairmont.
Windom 15, BEA 0
The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers opened their season by hosting a doubleheader on April 3 against the Windom Area Eagles.
The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the first game on their way to a 15-0 victory in four innings.
Windom Area scored two runs in each of the first two innings to move in front 4-0 heading into the third inning. The Eagles scored four more times in the top of the third to double their lead to 8-0.
A seven-run fourth inning put Windom Area on top 15-0 and ended the game.
Only four of the Eagles’ runs were earned as seven Buccaneer errors contributed to Windom Area’s scoring. Ava Grant was charged with the loss. She allowed 14 hits, issued seven walks and struck out five Eagle batters.
Meanwhile, Windom Area’s outstanding pitcher, Anja Nielsen did not allow a hit and walked one batter while striking out nine in her four innings of work.
Windom 16, BEA 4
The second game of the doubleheader had Blue Earth Area as the visitor on the scoreboard and they took a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning. However a big fourth inning by Windom Area was too much for the Bucs to overcome and the Eagles prevailed by a 16-4 score.
The Bucs’ first inning run came about when Sara Wirth walked with one out and moved to second on a bunt single by Jessi James. With two outs, Ava Grant lined a hard single to center field to plate Wirth with the game’s first run.
The Eagles scored once in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game at 1-1.
Windom Area added four more runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 5-1 lead.
The score held at 5-1 until the bottom of the fourth when the Eagles had 11 runners cross the plate to take a 16-4 lead.
BEA tallied three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Wirth walked with one out. Two wild pitches by the Eagles’ pitcher allowed Wirth to reach third base.
A double by James brought Wirth home with the Bucs’ second run of the game.
A ground out by Reagan Machacek moved James to third base. Grant’s single to left scored James with BEA’s third run of the contest.
After advancing to third base on wild pitches, Grant scored on a single by Abigail Greff.
The Bucs had seven hits but also committed seven errors.
Jessi James pitched all four innings to take the loss. Only six of the Eagles’ runs were earned. James gave up 12 hits, four walks and she had three strikeouts.
