Cardinals Announce Nolan Arenado News Before Cubs Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
It’s been a rough week for the St. Louis Cardinals. Looking to snap a four-game losing streak today against the Cubs, St. Louis will have to do so without eight-time All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado.
Arenado missed a pair of games earlier in the week while dealing with a bruised right index finger. He returned to the lineup on Friday, though.
After being listed as the starting third baseman for today’s game, Arenado was scratched roughly an hour before first pitch with a right shoulder impingement, a team official announced. He is officially being listed as day-to-day.
In Arenado’s place, Thomas Saggese will start at third base and bat fifth. The rest of Saturday’s lineup remains the same.
After today’s game, the Cardinals wrap up the series with the Cubs tomorrow night before an off day on Monday. St. Louis will then host the Nationals and Braves before the All-Star break.
Things were looking good for the Cardinals just last weekend, as they picked up a dominant sweep of the Guardians on the road. With first place in the division in sight, however, the Cardinals were swept by the Pirates and didn’t score a single run in the three-game series.
After an 11-3 loss to the Cubs yesterday, St. Louis is now 6.5 games out of first place in the NL Central. The team is still without Iván Herrera, who has been their best hitter when healthy. With Herrera’s absence along with Arenado and Contreras being pretty beat up, the Cardinals will welcome the All-Star break with open arms.
First pitch for today’s game between the Cardinals and Cubs is set for 1:20 p.m. CST at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
