NEWS RELEASE
BARRIE ARTS AND SPORTS ACADEMY

The cricket spirit was alive and well in Orillia on Saturday morning, as 15 eager young athletes bundled up and stepped onto the turf at West Orillia Sports Complex for the opening session of the Youth Cricket Camp, hosted by the Barrie Arts and Sports Academy (BASA) in partnership with Mariposa Cricket Club.
Despite a brisk 6 Celsius start, the young players were full of energy, diving into drills and instruction with enthusiasm that warmed the field more than the weather could. The session introduced participants to the basics of batting, fielding, and teamwork in what marks the first of an eight-session series running every Saturday until June 21.
"The kids showed incredible spirit today," said coach Hardik, who led batting instruction. "They weren’t fazed by the cold. Their focus, energy, and willingness to learn really impressed all of us."
Coach Amit, who ran warm-ups and fielding drills, added, "it’s inspiring to see such young players embrace the sport with so much excitement, especially on a cold morning like this. We saw potential in every single child who showed up today."
The turnout and energy at the session reflect a broader trend — cricket is growing rapidly in the region. Following last year’s highly successful clinics in Barrie and Orillia and the inaugural Super League Barrie, BASA has emerged as a leading force in grassroots cricket development across Simcoe County.
"What we saw today is exactly why we do this," said Nithin Liviero, president of BASA. "Fifteen kids showing up early on a chilly Saturday morning, giving it their all — that’s the power of community and the power of sport. We’re proud to help shape these young lives and give them a place where they belong."
With seven more sessions to go in this fully registered series, BASA is already looking ahead. The organization confirmed that it is currently planning a similar cricket program for Barrie this summer, continuing its commitment to providing inclusive, high-quality sports opportunities for youth across the region.
