SOUTH RANGE — In Portage Lake Little League Majors action Thursday, Copper Country Family Dentistry jumped out to a 5-4 lead and kept it through six. They downed Keweenaw Chevy, 10-8.
Back-to-back base hits by Family Dentistry’s Levi Nordstrom and Landon Kinnunen put two on to start the game. Starting pitcher Parker Linna loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch.
Brad Juopperi and Riley Kangas then cleared the bases with singles of their own. Juopperi scored on a wild pitch and Ethan Sawyer came home for the fifth run.
Keweenaw Chevy also came out swinging with four runs of their own in the first frame. Scoring that inning for the boys in yellow were Lewis Kilpela, Reid Kangas, Dirks Randell and Drea Durocher. It was 5-4 after one.
While Family Dentistry scored one one in the second frame, Keweenaw Chevy countered with three to take a 7-6 lead. Swinging a big bat that inning for Keweenaw Chevy was Randell who belted a bases-clearing home run to deep right. He came home two batters later courtesy of a Caleb Jeannotte single.
In the fourth inning, Family Dentistry regained the lead with three runs of their own — all off the bat of Juopperi. He slugged a three-run home run to left center to make it a 9-7 lead for his squad.
Strong defense kept the lead for the green team, and they added a cushion run in the fifth to make is 10-7. While Keweenaw Chevy scored one in the bottom of the sixth, this one ended with a fly-out to first base.
