CARNEY — It was the first time the Superior Central softball team saw a field to play on but came out on fire as it swept Carney-Nadeau 20-3 in game one and 23-7 in game two on Tuesday at Lloyd Benson Memorial Field in Carney.
In the first game the Cougars had nine runs on six hits in the first inning including two-run singles by Peyton Adams and Ruth Johnson.
The Cougars defense came out hot as Sammy Johnson sent the Wolves down in order with two of the outs coming by strikeout.
“It felt good to get back on the diamond,” Johnson said. “I’m happy with how I came out. It was better than I expected and glad we came away with the win and finally beat Carney at a sport.”
In the top of the second inning, the Cougars put up six runs including RBI doubles by Kierra McDonald, Rory Hancock and Ruth Johnson.
Carney-Nadeau scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning but fell in four due to the mercy rule.
In game two, the Cougars posted 10 runs in the first inning and followed it up with nine runs in the second inning including a three-run triple by Kylie Stuer that put the Cougars up 18-0.
“I felt good to get the triple,” Stuer said. “The conditions weren’t the best, but we played through it.”
The Cougars batters walked 18 times in the second game and Superior Central coach Richard Swajanen was happy with his team’s effort, having not had any outdoor practices.
“It was nice to get outside for once,” Swajanen said. “We hit the ball well and had a lot of nice line drive hits today.”
The Cougars are scheduled to play Gwinn at home today but will most likely be postponed due to the high amount of snow on the field. The next matchup after that will be Tuesday in Marquette.
