The Dallas Cowboys and Washington Commanders are squaring off in an NFC East rivalry matchup for the first of three Christmas Day NFL games.
The Cowboys lead 30-23 in the fourth quarter. Follow for play-by-play updates and analysis on today's game.
Q4 1:42 – Cowboys 30, Commanders 23
On third-and-1, Dak Prescott connects with George Pickens for a 21-yard completion, and that should do it for the Cowboys. Washington has one timeout left.
Q4 2:00 – Cowboys 30, Commanders 23
Dallas is looking to run out the clock. It will be second down after the break. Washington has three timeouts. A first down will seal it for the Cowboys.
Q4 2:09 – Cowboys 30, Commanders 23
Commanders on the move with Josh Johnson connecting on several short passes. Washington gets close to the red zone and turns it over to kicker Jake Moody.
Moody hits from 51 yards, and the Cowboys’ lead is back down to seven.
Q4 3:59 – Cowboys 30, Commanders 20
Washington just misses an interception that easily could have turned into a pick six as Dak Prescott’s pass to Brevyn Spann-Ford is broken up by Jordan Magee.
The Cowboys play for the field goal, and Brandon Aubrey nails it from 51 yards.
Q4 6:00 – Cowboys 27, Commanders 20
Dak Prescott completes a pass to Jalen Tolbert for 7 yards on fourth-and-2, and Dallas’ drive continues. The Cowboys are 5-for-5 on fourth down.
Q4 9:05 – Cowboys 27, Commanders 20
With Javonte Williams out, the Cowboys are turning to Malik Davis, and he has 83 yards on 15 carries, including a couple of nice runs on this drive.
Q4 11:32 – Cowboys 27, Commanders 20
Washington can’t take advantage of the terrific field position and has to punt. Dallas will start from its 14-yard line.
It’s been a broken record all season, but the Dallas defense has again been awful in all areas. Instead of pulling away against a bad Washington roster, the Cowboys have allowed the Commanders to be very much in this one with a quarter to play. Just throw the Jacory Croskey-Merritt 72-yard touchdown run in the highlight package of huge plays given up by Dallas’ defense this season. One-play, 72 yards and Washington is right back in the game.
It would be laughable to keep everything the same on this defense and think the results would be much improved next season. Major changes are needed. The 2020 bunch was bad. This group might be worse.
Q4 13:31 – Cowboys 27, Commanders 20
Dallas’ drive stalls, and the Cowboys send out Brandon Aubrey for another long field goal (a 58-yarder), and he pushes it to the right.
Q4 14:30 – Cowboys 27, Commanders 20
Dak Prescott completes a pass to Brevyn Spann-Ford for 31 yards, and just like that, Dallas is in Washington territory.
Q3 0:00 – Cowboys 27, Commanders 20
We are headed to the fourth quarter, and Dallas continues to lead this game, although its lead is just seven points.
Q3 0:19 – Cowboys 27, Commanders 20
The Commanders miss on their chances inside the 10 and have to settle for a Jake Moody 23-yard field goal. It was a little shaky, but it was good.
Q3 2:00 – Cowboys 27, Commanders 17
Josh Johnson with a nice throw to Terry McLaurin that just gets through the defense for a first down into Dallas territory. Then, Johnson finds Chris Moore for 16 yards, and 15 more yards are added after a facemask penalty on Dallas.
The Commanders are driving again.
Washington's five defensive sacks tie a team-high this season. They also had five against the Chargers and Raiders.
Q3 4:42 – Cowboys 27, Commanders 17
Washington’s defense steps up after the late hit penalty and gets the stop to force a field goal. But a 52-yard try is no problem for Brandon Aubrey, and the Cowboys’ lead is up to 10 points.
Q3 5:45 – Cowboys 24, Commanders 17
The Commanders get a sack on third down, but Frankie Luvu is called for a late hit on Dallas QB Dak Prescott, and the Cowboys get a free first down.
Q3 7:24 – Cowboys 24, Commanders 17
Dak Prescott with back-to-back connections with CeeDee Lamb to get the Cowboys’ next drive going, and they have crossed midfield into the Commanders’ territory. This feels like a huge drive for the Washington defense.
Q3 9:34 – Cowboys 24, Commanders 17
Jacory Croskey-Merritt goes the distance on the Commanders’ first play, and they are right back in this game. A 72-yard touchdown run for the rookie.
Q3 9:53 – Cowboys 24, Commanders 10
The Commanders get a bit of help from a pass interference call on third down against George Pickens, and then Pickens drops the pass on the second third-down attempt.
Dallas punts for the first time. Washington will take over from its 29-yard line after a Commanders penalty on the punt return.
