Rishabh Pant shared his injury update after getting ruled out of India’s squad from the five-match Test series against England. The England team management has recalled Jamie Overton back into the squad for the upcoming series-decider. In other news, Kevin Pietersen has backed England captain Ben Stokes over Day 5 handshake controversy with Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Monday, July 28.
Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant shared his injury update on social media, a day after officially getting ruled out of the remainder of the five-match Test series against England. Pant took to his Instagram account and shared a picture of his plastered leg, and updated his fans that he will soon be beginning his rehabilitation.
While batting for India in the first innings of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, Rishabh Pant sustained a nasty foot injury while attempting to play an unconventional reverse sweep against England fast bowler Chris Woakes.
The England team management has recalled Jamie Overton into the squad for the upcoming fifth Test of the five-match series against India. Overton will now be joining fellow fast bowlers Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue and Jofra Archer in the 15-player squad. The 31-year-old has so far played just one Test match for England, doing so back in June 2022 by going up against New Zealand at Leeds. The upcoming fifth Test of the series against India will commence from July 31 onwards at the iconic Oval in London.
Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has defended current skipper Ben Stokes over the ‘handshake’ saga that embroiled in the final few moments of the Old Trafford Test between England and India. While Stokes sought an early end to the match, Indian batters Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar kept playing to purse their respective centuries on Day 5.
Stokes, visibly frustrated, got into a heated argument with Jadeja and even refused to shake hands with the Indian all-rounder after the match. Pietersen, backing Stokes, claimed that the drawn result caused a physical and mental toll on England players, which eventually led to their frustration.
Former Sri Lanka Test opener Kaushal Silva has been named as the head coach of the Hong Kong men’s cricket team ahead of this year’s 2025 T20 Asia Cup in the UAE. Kaushal played 39 Test matches for Sri Lanka during his playing years between 2011 and 2018, aggregating 2,099 runs from 74 innings in the process at an average of 28.36.
Under his guidance, the Hong Kong team will face Afghanistan in their opening match of the 2025 Asia Cup on September 9.
Amidst his break away from the game, Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya once again embraced his love for the Kabaddi sport by starring in a promo for the upcoming Pro Kabaddi League (KBL) 2025 season. The cricketer first promoted the premier Indian Kabaddi tournament back in late-2023 for its tenth edition. In a short 20-second video, Hardik Pandya can be seen urging the Indian cricket fans to extend their love and support for Kabaddi next month.
