The National Football League’s (NFL) Dallas Cowboys have once again been ranked by Forbes as the world’s most valuable sports team.
Forbes’ annual list highlights the rapid rise of franchise valuations in recent years. For instance, the Dallas Cowboys were valued by the publication at US$5 billion in 2019, but that figure would not even crack the top 50 this year. The franchise has held the number one spot in Forbes’ ranking since 2016.
The top 50 teams are collectively worth more than US$353 billion, equating to an average of US$7.1 billion each – up 22 per cent YoY and more than double the combined value from just four years ago.
Eight teams in the top 50 posted YoY valuation increases of at least 30 per cent. That figure does not include Formula One’s Ferrari and Mercedes, both of which are up 58 per cent since 2023 but were not valued by Forbes last year.
The surge in sports team valuations can largely be attributed to rising media rights fees, led by the NFL and NBA’s current domestic broadcast deals, valued at approximately US$125.5 billion and US$76 billion respectively.
