Daren Sammy On WI Cricket Sexual Abuse Scandal: 'Justice Must Be Served' – News18

West Indies cricket and the world of cricket, in general, has been shaken by allegations of sexual abuse against an unnamed current player, prompting head coach Daren Sammy to demand justice while emphasizing the necessity of adhering to due process.
A recent report from Guyana’s Kaieteur News revealed that 11 women, including a teenager, have accused the cricketer of sexual offences, with some claims reportedly dating back to 2023. However, no formal charges have been filed as of yet.
Speaking to the media before the second Test against Australia, Sammy recognized the seriousness of the situation while highlighting the importance of respecting legal procedures.
“We are all aware of what’s been going on in the media. I’m very close to my players. I’ve had conversations with them. One thing I could say is, we believe in justice. We are a community that believes justice must be served,” the former captain Sammy stated.
“However, there’s a process. There are allegations, and we will continue to support in whatever way we can to ensure due process and the right system are followed,” he added.
Sammy, who has been West Indies’ white-ball coach since May 2023, stressed the importance of allowing the legal procedure to unfold before making any judgments.
“It’s allegations. We know the justice system; you’ve got to wait for things to process. I’m not a judge, I’m not a prosecutor. The information that has come out is what we have. I’m pretty sure at the end of the day, justice will be served,” he remarked.
When questioned about whether Cricket West Indies had initiated an internal investigation, Sammy refrained from confirming, nor denying.
“I can’t answer to that, to be honest. I’m pretty sure they are doing all they can to ensure the right process is followed.”
West Indies and Australia are set to face off in the second Test starting on Thursday at St. George’s in Grenada.
