Miami Dolphins tight end Darren Waller suffered a chest injury early on in the team’s 31-6 loss to the Cleveland Browns in Week 7.
He missed the majority of the game but tests later revealed the injury was a pec strain and not a full tear, per multiple reports. That means Waller should return this season.
In the meantime, the team placed Waller on injured reserve (IR) as he recovers from his pec strain. This means he will miss a minimum of four weeks of game action.
With Waller on IR, the team elevated Greg Dulcich from the practice squad to the active roster and signed Chris Myarick to take his place.
Waller made his season debut in Week 4 against the New York Jets. He had three catches for 27 yards and two touchdowns for the Dolphins in their lone win of the season through seven weeks.
In total, he’s tallied 10 catches for 117 yards and a team-high four touchdowns this season.
Miami’s passing offense has struggled as a whole this season. The Dolphins rank 26th in passing offense entering Week 8 and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa leads the NFL with 10 interceptions.
Here’s how soon Waller could return to the lineup – and the Dolphins’ depth chart at the position.
By putting Waller on IR, the Dolphins’ tight end will miss at least four weeks. Once those four weeks are up, the team can open his practice window and he has 21 days to either move to the active roster or be placed on season-ending IR.
Four weeks puts Waller on target to be back by Week 13 at the earliest. He’d be good to go for Week 12 but that is when Miami has their bye following their international game in Madrid, Spain against the Washington Commanders.
Miami returns from its bye for a home game against the New Orleans Saints in Week 13.
