FREDONIA — The Fredonia State women’s volleyball team defeated Buffalo State 3-0 earlier this season, but could not hold back the Bengals in the second meeting, a 3-2 loss in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament on Tuesday.
The Devils won the first and third sets, 25-23 and 24-13. Buffalo State won the second and third, 25-19 and 28-26, before taking the fifth-and-deciding set 15-9.
Kylie O’Brien had 14 kills, and Maeve Musilak had seven kills, five aces and 17 digs. Molly Cassidy had 23 assists.
On defense, Hannah Lombardi and Donnilynn Sheldon both had four blocks, and Kailea Sullivan had 33 digs.
Buffalo State was led by Ella Wittman (19 kills), Nicole Delli Colli (10 kills), and Reagan Schneider (10 kills). April Jakubowski had six aces.
In the fifth set, the Bengals jumped out to a 5-0 lead. After a kill by Musielak, the Devils eventually cut the lead to two points, 8-6. However, Buffalo State scored six of the next seven to go up 14-7 before the Devils’ season ended on a service error.
Fredonia State finishes the season at 12-16. Buffalo State moves to 15-15 and will go on to face No. 1 seed Cortland in the semifinals.
SOCCER
FREDONIA — At the conclusion of SUNYAC tournaments, two men’s and two women’s soccer players were named to the all-tournament teams. Both squads won a first-round contest.
For the men, sophomore Ryan Ameis and junior Thomas McDonald were named. Ameis scored the team’s only goal in a 1-0 win over Plattsburgh in the first round. McDonald, a goalkeeper, made 11 saves and gave up two goals. The Devils eventually fell to Buffalo State 2-0 in the semifinal round.
“Thomas and Ryan were integral to our victory over Plattsburgh,” said head coach P.J. Gondek. “Thomas made some key second half saves and Ryan did his usual defensive work and scored the game winner. Their consistency carried over into the semifinals at Buffalo State even in the loss. To be fair these performances were typical of them throughout the entire season. Looking forward to having them both back in 2026.”
The women also had their goaltender, freshman Casey Fetzner, honored, along with junior Bronwyn Madden. The women won their first-round game 1-0 in double overtime over Oswego thanks to a golden goal from Madden. She would assist on the team’s only score in a 2-1, season-ending loss at Plattsburgh. Fetzner made 16 saves and allowed two goals. Ten of those saves came in the shutout of Oswego.
ICE HOCKEY
FREDONIA — Chatham scored four times in the first period to take a 4-1 lead into the intermission, en route to a 6-1 victory over the Fredonia State men’s hockey team last Saturday.
Chatham (4-0) completed the weekend sweep of the Devils, who are still looking for their first victory at 0-5.
Cash Anderson scored the Devils’ lone goal, with an assist from Owen Arnold.
Jameson Kaine took the loss in goal, giving up five goals with 16 saves in two periods. Jake Williams finished the game, giving up one goal on five shots in the third period.

Chatham scored the games’s first five goals en route to a 5-1 win over the Fredonia State men’s hockey team last Friday afternoon in Pittsburgh.
The Devils were finally able to score in the final 12 seconds of the game.
Five different Cougars scored for the host team, with Nick Cyprian and Bekk McClaine each garnering a goal and an assist. Chatham came out strong in the first period with three goals over the game’s first 17 minutes. Goaltender Nikolas Trakakis just missed earning the shutout with 32 saves.
Fredonia State’s lone tally came when Alexis Gonzalez-Lambert was assisted by Carson Ricci and Keenan McNeill late in the game. Charles-Anthony Barbeau made 36 saves while surrendering five scores, one of which came on a power play.
