India’s team selection for the first ODI against Australia in Perth has drawn reactions after Kuldeep Yadav – one of India’s most in-form bowlers was left out of the XI.
Despite his recent performances, the chinaman spinner was benched as India opted for a longer batting line-up, a decision that didn’t sit well with former off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin openly questioned head coach Gautam Gambhir’s approach of prioritizing batting depth over bowling strength.
He pointed out that Kuldeep’s omission made little sense, especially at the Optus Stadium – a venue known for its big boundaries and bounce, conditions ideal for a wrist-spinner.
“They want batting depth because Axar and Washington can bat, but focus on bowling too. In these big grounds, if Kuldeep can’t bowl with freedom, then where will he play?” Ashwin said, expressing his disappointment with the team’s balance.

Ashwin went further, calling out what he described as an overreliance on all-rounders. He argued that India’s best bowlers should always make the XI, regardless of how much depth the team wants in its batting order.
“If batting depth is what helps you win games, then batters should take responsibility. Don’t pick a player only because you want to extend your batting. Kitne all-rounders chaiye aapko? (How many all-rounders do you need?) You already have three,” Ashwin added.

India lost the opening ODI by seven wickets, with Australia comfortably chasing down a modest total in a rain-reduced game. With two matches left in the series, the team management’s next selection call will be closely watched.
