Welcome to Sportstar’s LIVE coverage of the first One Day International between England and India in Southampton on Wednesday.
The Indian women’s team took a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against England after beating the host by four wickets in the first match on Wednesday at The Ageas Bowl stadium in Southampton.
Unsurprisingly, Deepti Sharma has been named as Player of the Match for her 62*(64) and 0/58 from 10 overs
India’s chase of 259 is the second-highest chase it has achieved in ODIs.
The Indian women’s team registered its second-highest successful chase in One Day Internationals during its first ODI against England on Wednesday at The Ageas Bowl in Southampton.
A fantastic chase from India, who have produced a clinical performance to take the lead. Kranti Goud and Sneh Rana lead the way with the ball, making early inroads with the ball before Sophia Dunkley fought back with the bat. The spinners, however, were miserly, and England was restricted to 258.
With the bat, Smriti and Pratika impressed once again, and despite a middle order wobble, Deepti Sharma led her side home with ten deliveries to spare.
Kate Cross back again, and Amanjot pulls over the infield the level the scores! A ball later she drives through point, and India wins by four wickets!
Filer returns, with the game coming to a close. India is now doing this in singles, Amanjot and Deepti rotate the strike to get their side closer.
Kate Cross returns to the attack, can she produce something for England?
Death overs hitting who? Amanjot plays a gentle push that runs past the bowler, mid-on, and mid-off to trickle away for four more! Delightful shot. Two more then brings up the 250 for India.
Filer continues. England has closed the gap ever so slightly but India remains ahead of the game. The bowler goes short, and Deepti gets a top-edge over the keeper’s head to get four! Crucial boundary.
More concern for England still as Filer has now gone down with an injury. The physio comes out to treat her, and she can continue.
Good over for India, which has almost made it home.
Dean again. Deepti has negated her impact by judiciously utilising the sweep shot today and she plays another for a single.
Dean strikes again! Richa Ghosh charges down the wicket eyeing the glory shot, but makes contact with thin air. Amy Jones takes the bails off and Ghosh is on her way!
Richa Ghosh 10 (12) st Jones b Dean
Impressive all-rounder Amanjot Kaur comes to the middle now.
Filer again, as India senses victory. Filer beats Ghosh on the outside edge twice, but she needs to find it to keep England in the game.
Ghosh responds by walking down the wicket and chipping it over point for two. No boundaries in the over, but that will do for India.
Interesting ploy from Nat Sciver-Blunt as Charlie Dean returns to the attack. She drifts too far down the leg-side and Ghosh can paddle it away for four.
Deepti Sharma then plays another sweep, and brings up her fourteenth ODI half-century. She has played exceptionally, can she take India home?
Lauren Filer returns to the attack for England with India just pulling away. Another mis-field at point does no favours as Deepti Sharma adds two more.
Jemimah looks for the scoop, and gloves it behind! Is this too late for England, or is there another twist in this game?
Jemimah 48 (54) c Jones b Filer
Richa Ghosh walks in at seven, can she see India home? She gets off the mark with a single, and India takes five from the over.
Sophie Ecclestone to bowl out. This could be a crucial passage of play.
The Indian batters start watchfully against England’s trump card, who responds by sneaking a delightful delivery through Deepti Sharma’s defences and just past off-stump.
Just three from the over but Ecclestone is done.
Bell continues, with her seventh over now. Line was awry there, wide from the pacer. FOUR! Deepti’s quite lucky there. It seems to be a leg bye, dangerously close to skittling the stumps, as the ball races down fine leg. Well, well, well! A video review shows that Deepti would have been out if England had taken a review! Will that come to bite them later? Stay tuned.
Ecclestone is brought back by Sciver-Brunt as England slowly loses its grip on the match. This is also the spinner’s penultimate over, and 10 more overs to go after this. 200 up for India.
Bell returns. First ball and the batters run a two. Jemimah was raring to go for a third run but that would have called for a run out chance. SIX! Deepti’s one-handed shot sends the sailing over mid-wicket! That was also the first maximum of the match! Sloppy misfield there which allows a single.
Deepti and Jemimah call for a sip of water. Run rate right now is just under five while six runs an over is the asking rate. Lamb continues and Jemimah hits it over the covers to notch up a FOUR!
Dean continues. Good running from the batters. Singles and twos have now become important in this match. Deepti takes two and that brings up a 50-partnership between the two. That’s what was lacking for India, a partnership.
It’s run-a-ball now. Lamb continues and Deepti says ‘stop’. Perhaps a disturbance at the sidescreen.
FOUR! Dean continues and Deepti sweeps well to find the boundary through square leg. Jemimah sends the full toss past the diving mid off for a FOUR!
Emma Lamb given the ball for her first over. And Jemimah’s powerful shot on the backfoot through point finds no fielders in the deep, and goes for a FOUR!
Dean with the ball, after the drinks break. Oops. That’s an overthrow and allows the India batters to take a single. Five runs off this over.
Cross with the eighth over. Jemimah cuts and sends the ball to backward point. Filer does well to get a hand on it but the ball eventually touches the ropes for a FOUR! Close! A leading edge off of Jemimah’s bat but it falls safely, far from a fielder’s reach. Drinks break now.
Dean continues as the required run rate crosses 6 runs per over, but Deepti Sharma begins the over with a sweep that finds the fence!
Two more singles in the over, a more profitable one for India.
Kate Cross again, as the pressure builds on India. Jemimah looks for an inventive reverse scoop, but makes contact with fresh air.
Tight over from Kate Cross, only two singles from it.
The spin of Charlie Dean continues from the other end, Harmanpreet misses a sweep and there is a loud appeal for LBW! Umpire says not out, and Sciver-Brunt sends it upstairs. No bat, and it’s three reds! The Indian skipper is gone! Brilliant review from Sciver-Brunt and England has a massive breakthrough.
Harmanpreet 17 (27) lbw Dean
Deepti Sharma walks to the middle with the game very much in the balance now. Another botched sweep attempt, and Deepti is fortunate her off-stump remains intact.
Ecclestone out of the attack, and Kate Cross takes her place. Rodrigues looks to scoop and gloves it fine for a single.
Good running from Harmanpreet and Jemimah, as the skipper places the ball into gap on either side of deep mid-wicket to pick up consecutive twos. Another neatly placed clip is cleared up by fine leg for two more.
Eight from the over, more productive for India.
Dean again. The runs have dried up slightly for India after those two wickets, and Dean continues that with a three-run over.
Ecclestone into her eight, and is greeted by a fantastic sweep shot for four by Jemimah!
Ecclestone, ever the competitor, bounces back with four dots in a row. Jemimah finds the sweeper at deep cover for a single to end the over.
We’ve reached the halfway stage of the innings, India needs another 146 runs to win with 7 wickets in hand.
Spin from both ends as Dean continues. Jemimah sweeps to get her first run of the day.
You can tell that the back-to-back wickets have given England some belief, as Lauren Filer produces a good diving stop at fine leg. Four more from the Dean over.
Ecclestone to keep going as England senses an opening. England’s fielding has not been up to scratch for much of today but Nat Sciver-Brunt produces a full length dive to keep Jemimah on zero.
Just the one comes from the over, with the game on a knife’s edge.
NSB answers the question, Charlie Dean is into the attack and on the money straight away.
Good start from Dean, who troubled India in the last T20I. The batters go for a quick single, and there is a vague appeal for a run-out. OH MY IT’S OUT! Poor running from Harleen Deol, who doesn’t ground her bat and is just short to be caught out by a direct hit. A freak opening for England, poor game awareness by India’s number three.
Harleen Deol 27 (44) run out (Davidson-Richards)
Jemimah Rodrigues walks in at number five.
Ecclestone to continue. England has used just the four bowlers so far, when will it turn towards a fifth bowling option?
Ecclestone is into a good rhythm now, getting nice spin and drift to Deol. She bowls six dots in a row, and England’s strike bowler has a maiden to her name.
Filer to Harmanpreet. The pacer’s line is erring, a wide on the second ball. Filer continues to attack the leg stump as Harleen flicks it for a single. Harmanpreet pulls it well towards mid-wicket but Beaumont saves a couple of runs. 100 comes up for India.
GONE! Ecclestone gets England the breakthrough! She continues to bowl at the stump line and this one, an arm ball, forces Pratika to step across the crease and skittles the stumps.
Pratika 36 (51) b Ecclestone
Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur has come out to bat. Will Harmanpreet need to walk back just as she came in? An appeal for run out and the umpire goes upstairs. The batter will breathe a sigh of relief as she has made her crease.
Filer with the ball. England’s fielding has been porous, dotted by a number of misfields so far. Just four off the over though.
Ecclestone with the ball. Pratika notches up another FOUR! This time, it’s a cut on the backfoot and through backward point. Tammy Beaumont tries to chase after the ball, but her effort isn’t enough.
Filer continues. Backfoot punch from Harleen and the ball races through the covers and the outfield for a FOUR! Fast outfield, this! Harleen merely times the ball and Ecclestone’s chase is rendered futile. Another FOUR!
Ecclestone continues. No boundary, tight over from the left-arm spinner
Filer with her second over. Thick edge there from Harleen’s bat as the ball goes to deep third. Just a single. Pratika pulls a shorter ball but Lauren Bell swats the ball away with both hands to save a boundary at deep backward square leg. FOUR! Harleen finds the gap through point.
Harleen hits Ecclestone for a FOUR through the covers! Some more running between the wickets as the duo slowly rebuilds India’s chase.
Lauren Filer with her first over. The pacer starts with a wide. Second ball much better, Pratika’s drives the ball back onto her pads. A single to follow after the opener negotiates the delivery down fine leg. Short ball to Harleen and the Indian batter almost nicks one behind to Jones.
Sophie Ecclestone with her first over. Harleen takes a three there. Just four runs off it.
Bell back, looking for another breakthrough. She backs up her wicket with four tight deliveries, keeping Harleen Deol on zero. Harleen eventually gets off the mark with a flick round the corner.
Just one off the over, and with that comes the end of the Powerplay with India 52 for the loss of one wicket. India has begun positively, but England will be buoyed by the wicket of Smriti Mandhana.
Cross to bowl five on the trot. Pratika flicks the ball off her pads for two to bring up 50 for India.
A tight over from Cross, only three from it.
Lauren Bell keeps going. Smriti Mandhana has found the middle of the bat more times than she has got reward for, but these are promising signs for India.
She’ll get four for a lovely pull shot that races away to the boundary! Make that two in a row!
AND THEN GONE! Big riposte from Lauren Bell, into the channel and Mandhana nicks off looking to defend. Good comeback by Bell, and England is on the board.
Mandhana 28 (24) c Jones b Bell
Harleen Deol walks in at three.
Cross gets a fourth over, and Amy Jones is now standing up to the stumps for the experienced seamer. Pratika picks up two more through point.
Misfield at cover gives Pratika four more! This has been a very positive start from the tourists.
Bell looking to bounce back after an expensive last over, but her line is too straight and Mandhana just has to tickle it past fine leg for four. India looking good now.
Bell recovers well but six still came from the over.
Kate Cross continues her spell, and Pratika plays a delightful backfoot punch through point for four more! Both Indian batters have their first boundaries now.
Unfortunate ricochet to allow India a single. Pratika defends a ball straight back, and it rolls into the stumps and roll away. Not the first time a defensive shot has hit the stumps in the last couple of days for an Indian batter.
Bell continues, and Smriti pulls for four! First boundary of the innings for India.
Bell strays onto the pads again, and Mandhana times the ball beautifully through the leg-side. Mandhana is away now. Bell responds with a good yorker, but Smriti is watchful to keep it out.
Cross again, and Pratika clips it off the pads for a single.
Mandhana then pushes the ball off the backfoot into the off-side for a couple more.
Lauren Bell will take the new ball from the other end. Good line and length to keep Pratika quiet thus far, delivering four dots in a row.
Draws the edge, but past the solitary slip! Deep third clears up to keep it down to one, but a good start by Bell.
Cross starts on the money and Pratika is behind it compactly to defend. She gets off the mark next delivery, pushing a ball past point for two.
Cross then fires a couple down leg and the first extras are on the board.
Mandhana now off the mark with a delightful clip off the pads for two.
Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal are out in the middle looking to get India’s chase off to a good start. Kate Cross has the new ball for England, and will be looking for some early movement. Here we gooo……
An innings that shifted both ways ends with the game in the balance. India struck early, with Kranti Goud removing both openers inside the first five overs, before Sneh Rana’s double-strike left England four down for less than 100 with skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt in the shed.
However, birthday girl Sophia Dunkley combined brilliantly with Alice Davidson-Richards to add 106, before Sophie Ecclestone provided a few blows late on to take England up to 258.
India will still fancy itself to chase this score down, but it will not be easy by any means. Join us shortly for the chase!
Amanjot to bowl the final over. And Ecclestone begins with a FOUR! Shorter ball is pulled over mid off. 250 up for England and kudos to England’s middle order for getting the side back into the game and posting what seems to be a competitive total at this ground. No one on the off side and Dunkley lifts it over the fielders for another FOUR! That throw from Pratika catches a running Dunkley right in her helmet. Last ball, and Amanjot skittles Dunkley’s stumps.
Dunkley 83 (92) b Amanjot
Deepti bowling out. Dunkley tries to reverse sweep but it seems to have caught the pad. India goes upstairs. And Dunkley stays on as the wickets are adjudged to be missing.
FOUR! Inside out and Dunkley quite majestically sends it over the covers! Loose ball from Deepti, down the leg, and Ecclestone just has to deftly guide it towards fine leg for a FOUR!
‘ Bas, bas, (that’s enough)’ says Richa, and Deepti angrily throws the ball to the wicketkeeper.
Charani bowling out. Dunkley with wonderful placement, between long on and dee mid-wicket, for a FOUR! She follows it up with a cut through covers for another FOUR! Eleven off that over.
Deepti with her penultimate over now. FOUR! Ecclestone uses her feet and dispatches the full toss past the mid off for a boundary!
Kranti with her penultimate over. Slower yorker, Ecclestone defends it. FOUR! Shorter and Dunkley hammers it over point and finds the boundary.
Deepti with her eighth over. Just a few singles from the over.
Charani with her penultimate over and England’s 200 comes up. GONE! The partnership is broken after Davidson-Richards gets stumped by Richa! The Indian wicketkeeper had initially fumbled collecting the ball, which looked to give the batter enough time to get back to her crease but the half-centurion seemed to have given up.
Davidson-Richards 53 (73) st Richa b Charani
Sophie Ecclestone comes out to bat.
Deepti with her seventh over. And that’s the 100-run partnership between the batters, off 134 balls. Alice Davidson-Richards scores her half-century!
Looks like Sneh Rana is getting some medical treatment. And she has gone off the field. Kranti returns for her eighth over. That shot from Davidson-Richards seems to have confounded the cameraperson but the ball does find its way to the boundary for a FOUR!
Brisk running between the wickets as Davidson-Richards nears her 50.
Sneh bowling out. A single for Dunkley and the birthday girl notches up her sixth ODI half-century!
Amanjot continues. At what point will this pair look to step on the accelerator?
Dunkley plays square through the off-side and beats the dive of the fielder for four! Profitable over for England, eight from it.
Rana approaching the end of her spell, Dunkley is starting to show a little more attacking endeavour now. Advances down the pitch, and chips it aerially just past a diving Jemimah at midwicket! Three more from the over.
Amanjot back for her eight over of the day. Width, and Dunkley cuts it for two as the sweeper clears up. The English batters are now looking to give themselves a little more room to play off the stumps, but have only been able to find fielders so far.
Rana again, and Davidson-Richards picks up two by opening the face. A couple more singles come from the over, and the scoreboard ticks along a little more.
N Sree Charani continues to hunt her first wicket of the day. She mixes up her speeds well to prevent both batters from finding the boundary, and only three more singles come from the over.
England has struggled to score freely when the bowlers have bowled in the line of the stumps today.
Rana to continue. Fantastic, miserly bowling from her as the over goes for just three more
N Sree Charani for her seventh. Dunkley rocks back in her crease and pulls to deep midwicket for a single.
Beats the bat as Dunkley looks to cut! Dunkley responds with a cleverly placed reverse-sweep that beats short third for four!
Sneh Rana returns, can she break the partnership? Rana has not left off-stump today, and England has not been able to find scoring shots against here.
Rana delivers another tight over which goes for just three. A single off the final delivery brings up 150 for England.
The second drinks break is called with the game interestingly poised again. India are slightly ahead of the game, having removed the big fish in Sciver-Brunt. However, Dunkley and Davidson-Richards have batted nicely, taking the odd risk to keep the scoreboard ticking.
How much will England want from here? 260-270 seems like the minimum to stay in the game.
Kranti Goud into her seventh. Another misfield, this time at cover, but it only costs India one.
Four! Nicely played through point by Dunkley, who stands up to ride the bounce and cut it away. Goud beats Davidson-Richards with a peach! Pure luck keeps the batter at the crease as it beats the outside edge and off-stump.
An action-packed over.
Deepti again. Another one down! Jemimah this time! Dunkley chips one above her head through midwicket, and it bursts through the hands. Should have been taken, India needs to tighten its fielding again.
Still, a tight over from the off-spinner, just four from it.
DROPPED! Kranti almost takes her third wicket as Davidson-Richards’ shot almost falls kindly to her. The ball clatters off of the youngster’s palms and the batter gets another life.
Deepti with her fifth. Apart from the Indian bowler almost getting Davidson-Richards’ head with a wild throw seemingly at the stumps, nothing much from this over.
Pratika Rawal is given the ball. Perhaps the part-time bowler can get India’s fifth wicket. But before that happens, Dunkley welcomes Pratika with a FOUR through the covers.
Deepti returns for her fourth over. FOUR! Seems ages have past since England found the boundary. It’s Davidson-Richardson who uses her feet and sends it over mid on.
Charani with the ball. Davidson-Richards tries to cut but misses. Nothing much going on for England’s batters now. The match seems to have plateaued now.
We are halfway through the innings now. Sneh with her fifth over. Boundaries are drying up for England now, only singles and twos. Spinners well and truly putting the squeeze on.
Charani continues. Dunkley deftly guides it towards deep fine leg but Sneh chases it down.
Sneh continues. Another good over from the Indian spinner, conceding just four runs.
Charani returns for her fourth over. 100 up for the host as Dunkley takes a two. A good over from the young spinner.
Sneh continues and she strikes on the first ball! It’s the England skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt who has to walk back after holing out to Jemimah at short mid-wicket. Jemimah takes a fine catch, getting off the blocks quickly to take a diving catch.
Sciver-Brunt 41 (52) c Jemimah b Sneh
Dunkley finally off the mark as she takes a single on her ninth ball.
Amanjot continues, and Sciver-Brunt muscles it off a length for four. Good riposte from the English skipper.
A single brings Dunkley on strike, who has looked a little nervy and is yet to get off the mark. Two more dots keep her scoreless so far.
Rana again, stays tight on off-stump. AND A WICKET!! It had been coming. The pressure was building, and Emma Lamb looked to relieve pressure by going over mid-off. She gets none of it and can only mistime it straight to skipper Harmanpreet Kaur instead.
Lamb 39 (50) c Harmanpreet b Rana
Sophia Dunkley is the new batter, on her birthday.
Change at both ends, as Amanjot returns for a sixth over. Richa Ghosh is staying up to the stumps as well, perhaps to stop the batters from using their feet as they have so far.
The ploy is successful, with just two singles coming from a tight over.
Bowling change, as Sneh Rana takes Deepti Sharma’s place at the bowling crease. A muted appeal off the first delivery.
Dropped chance?? Looks like it. A tough chance for midwicket, as the batter advances and nails it straight to the fielder, but it goes through the hands. A missed opportunity.
Sree Charani again, Sciver-Brunt is watchful. The left-arm spinner is giving her no room to free the arms, and the England captain is showing small signs of frustration.
She looks to lift it over mid-off, but it goes to the fielder on the bounce.
Outstanding fielding from Jemimah! NSB uses her feet to meet the ball on the full and power it through cover, but Rodrigues’ dive keeps it to a dot. Tight over from Charani.
Deepti Sharma continues. She fires one down the leg side and tries to get away with it by appealing for a catch but the umpire is unmoved.
A ball later, Lamb looks to go over mid-on again. She gets nowhere near it, but gets enough of it to get it over Harleen Deol for two. She now attempts the lap again, and gets it away for another pair.
The end of the over marks the arrival of drinks. India will be happy with Kranti Goud’s early inroads, but Emma Lamb and Nat Sciver-Brunt have steadied the English ship since then.
Both spinners have stuck fairly tight to the stumps since the end of the Powerplay, with the English batters generally looking to the sweep for scoring runs.
The leg-bye stolen in the LBW appeal in the last over also brought up the 50-run partnership between this pair.
Sree Charani continues, and the batters are content to knock the ball around for singles. Sciver-Brunt looks for the sweep again on the final delivery of the over, but only gets a thick edge.
Deepti continues to hone in on the stumps, but Sciver-Brunt sweeps to pick the gap for four!
Once again, a big appeal next delivery as she looks for the lap shot but given not out. India takes the review. No bat involved, but impact is outside the line and India burns a review. The lap shot has not worked very well for either batter so far though.
Slower through the air from Deepti, and Sciver-Brunt works it square for another single to end the over.
Changes from both ends now, Kranti Goud gets a rest and the impressive N Sree Charani comes on from the other end. Sciver-Brunt plays it off the stumps to deep cover for another single.
FOUR! Lamb advances and hits the bowler over mid-on for a boundary. Didn’t get all of it but good intent from the England batter. A big appeal next delivery as Lamb looks for the lap sweep and misses, but it is outside the line.
First change in bowling for India as Deepti Sharma replaces Amanjot Kaur. Sciver-Brunt works her to deep mid-wicket for a single.
Lamb and Sciver-Brunt continue to run well, pinching a quick single before running two more. Nonetheless, a tidy start from the off-spinner
Kranti with the ball and Sciver-Brunt drives it past two diving fielders in Jemimah and Harmanpreet to score a FOUR! That’s the end of the PowerPlay.
Amanjot with her fifth over.
Third ball was slower, almost in the blockhole. FOUR to end the over! Full toss and Lamb sends it through mid-wicket.
Kranti continues, slightly down the leg stump and Sciver-Brunt easily flicks it through the leg side for a FOUR!
Another wide for Kranti. Her line at times has been a problem for her.
FOUR! Lamb this time, casually finds the gap between mid on and mid-wicket to send the ball towards cow corner.
Amanjot continuing. Almost nicked one off NSB’s bat. After bouncing, the ball kept low, catching the England skipper off guard.
Next ball, fuller and Sciver-Brunt drives it straight-ish past a diving mid off for a FOUR!
Kranti continues. Can she take a third in her third? She’s bowling to England skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt, back from injury. No wicket, but just one run off it.
Amanjot continues for her third over.
A random short ball there from the pacer which is called a wide.
FOUR! First of the England innings as Lamb pulls a shorter one through square leg. No fielder there.
Kranti continues.
Appeal from the Indians! For an lbw and Harmanpreet has taken a review. OUT! Kranti takes her second wicket in just her second over!
Beaumont 5 (7) lbw Kranti
India and UP Warriorz seamer Kranti Goud took her maiden international wicket in the first ODI between India Women and England Women at Southampton on Wednesday.
Amanjot continues. Emma Lamb, the new batter, on strike. Jemimah chases after that cover drive from Lamb, which looked certain to go for a boundary, but the Indian player saves it acrobatically and restricts the English batters to a three. Five off the over.
Kranti Goud bowling from the other end and straightaway, a slower full delivery. Almost a yorker. Jones defends it. Next ball, a wide. Lot of movement off Goud’s bowling, moving away from the right hander.
OUT! Jones has to walk back! Slightly good length and the slightest of movements into the batter and the ball gently clips the bails! Kranti’s first international wicket!
Jones 1 (7) b Kranti
Stump-to-stump bowling from the youngster, who announced herself during this year’s Women’s Premier League with UP Warriorz.
Teams are coming out onto the ground at the Ageas Bowl, under Southampton’s bright sin. Amanjot Kaur to open the bowling. According to the commentators, the average first innings score at this ground in just 202. Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones open for England.
First ball, slight movement away from the right hander and the batter flicks it fine. Fine work by the boundary rider to save a run.
Two dots to follow. India’s fielding so far (yes, it’s too early to judge) good.
