England Women will look to restore parity in the three-match ODI series in India Women when they play the second ODI at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London on Saturday, July 19. This is a do-or-die encounter for England, and they would want to keep the series alive, especially after going down 2-3 in the preceding T20I rubber.
In the first ODI at The Rose Bowl in Southampton, England were restricted to 258/6 after winning the toss and opting to bat first. Kranti Goud bagged two wickets with the new ball, and Sneh Rana bagged a couple through the middle overs to deter England’s spirit. Half-centuries from Sophia Dunkley and Davidson Richards helped the hosts to get past the 250-run mark.
In reply, India’s top-order batters got starts but couldn’t capitalise. In the end, a 90-run partnership off 86 balls between Deepti Sharma and Jemimah Rodrigues proved to be the difference between the two sides. The former finished unbeaten on 62, top-scoring for the Women in Blue, who chased the target with four wickets and 10 balls to spare.
The Lord’s Cricket Ground is expected to favour the seamers, especially when the ball is new. There are swing bowlers on both sides who can use the conditions to their advantage. The spinners could come into play in the second innings.
Tammy Beaumont, Sophia Dunkley, Nat Sciver-Brunt (C), Emma Lamb, Amy Jones (WK), Davidson Richards, Charlie Dean, Sophie Ecclestone, Kate Cross, Lauren Filer, Lauren Bell.
Smriti Mandhana, Pratika Rawal, Harleen Deol, Jemimah Rodrigues, Harmanpreet Kaur (C), Richa Ghosh (WK), Amanjot Kaur, Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana, Shree Charani, Kranti Gaud.
Sophia Dunkley looked in ominous touch in the first ODI after blowing hot and cold in the T20I matches. She scored 83 runs off 92 deliveries, belting nine boundaries. Dunkley’s ability to keep the scoreboard ticking through the middle overs will be crucial for England.
Sneh Rana combined guile and control to put the England batters in all sorts of problems in the first ODI. She finished with magnificent figures of 2/31 in 10 overs. She will look to keep things tight through the middle overs once again and if she can pick up wickets, it will be a bonus for India.
