As the cricketing extravaganza unfolds in the highly anticipated 13th edition of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, in India and Sri Lanka from 30th September 2025 to 2nd November 2025, Sophia Dunkley achieves a significant career milestone: 1,000 One-Day International (ODI) runs.
She achieved the landmark in the game against Pakistan, in Colombo on 15th October 2025. At 27, Dunkley’s journey from Gros Islet to the grand stages of an evolving women’s cricket landscape has been both inspiring and impactful. Her recent performance against India in Southampton (in the pre-World Cup series) only underlined her growing stature as one of England’s premier batters in the 50-over format.
Sophia Dunkley first donned the national colours in a T20 International on 12th November 2018 against Bangladesh at the ICC Women’s World T20, making a quiet debut at Gros Islet. However, it was in the longer white-ball format that she truly began to spread her wings. Dunkley made her ODI debut on June 27, 2021, against India at the County Ground in Bristol, a fitting connection to a venue that would later host one of her most memorable innings.
In her 41 ODI innings to date, Dunkley has amassed 1,010 runs at an average of 26.57 and a strike rate of 83.74, showcasing her ability not only to anchor innings but also shift gears when required. Her record includes six half-centuries and a century, reflecting both consistency and the hunger for big scores.
Perhaps Dunkley’s most iconic ODI innings came on July 15, 2022, during the second ODI against South Africa, again at her debut ground in Bristol. With the series in the balance, Dunkley produced a majestic knock of 107 from 93 balls, peppered with 8 boundaries and 2 sixes, to steer England to a commanding position. She was deservedly named the Player of the Match, not just for her runs but for the authority with which she constructed her innings under pressure.
That century was more than just a personal milestone; it signalled Dunkley’s readiness to be a key contributor in England’s middle order, a role she has embraced over the last few years.
During the multi-format white-ball series against India, a tour that produced some thrilling cricket, Dunkley reaffirmed her class with a fighting 83 off 92 deliveries in the 1st ODI at the Rose Bowl, Southampton, on July 16, 2025. On a day when England found themselves chasing early momentum, the right-hander anchored the innings with poise and authority.
Her knock, laced with 9 boundaries, stood out amidst a fluctuating batting performance and proved vital in keeping England competitive despite eventually falling short. With that innings, she registered her 6th ODI half-century, propelling her ODI run tally past 900, building up to a promising World Cup campaign.

This milestone comes at an important juncture. England, led by Nat Sciver-Brunt, are currently well placed with three wins from three games, placed 2nd on the points table in the ongoing 13th edition of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, hosted by India and partly in Sri Lanka, from 30th September 2025 to 2nd November 2025.
For Dunkley, the ongoing 4th fixture in their campaign, against Pakistan, led by skipper Fatima Sana, was a crucial platform for her to find her rhythm back with the bat in the tournament. Coming in at 38/3 in the 7th over of the innings, after the departure of skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt, the innings offered a chance to pull her team back into the contest, while she entered an elite club of English women cricketers who have crossed the 1,000-run mark in ODIs.
However, she 11 (21 balls) couldn’t stay long enough to bail her side out of trouble. She becomes only the 21st England women’s player to do so, a testament to the select company she has entered.
Her entry into the 1,000-run club in the ODI format, a landmark moment, not just a number, but a reflection of grit, growth, and greatness in the making.
Her pre-World Cup form has either vanished or diminished on spin-friendly tracks on offer in India and Sri Lanka in the ongoing edition of the tournament. She has fallen for duck, 18, and 11 in the three opportunities she has had in the tournament with the bat so far. Even though England has managed a blemish-free record in their campaign so far.
In an era where women’s cricket is evolving rapidly with heightened professionalism, amplified visibility, and broader global audiences, Sophia Dunkley’s rise is symbolic of a new generation of players who are not only technically proficient but also carry the charisma to define modern-day cricket narratives.
